Personal Stress go through The growing academic anticipation in the contemporary world has stressed college student. The mental stress among the college students has gained attention of several scholars. This research paper investigates the personal stress college students undergo, with respect to their personal, emotional, mental, and health conditions. It studies the relationship between these factors and the stress prevailing among the college students. Though the study shows a positive correlation between studied condition and mental stress, each factor has a different impact on the mental stress on the college students. Introduction Stress has become one of the major problematic issues in contemporary society that has affect individuals and the general public. Every individual faces issue and challenges social and personal issues that are the major contributing action in the pressure and anxiety in the behavior patterns of the individual. In the recent society, nearly 80% of the students are reported to be victim o stress and burden in their daily lives. It is also observed that the stress negatively affects mental and cognitive condition of these students that can affect their professional and academic performance. Not only the external factors are the cause for the stress, but it also involves their personal, family, work lives and relationship. Personal issues have found to be one of the prominent elements that either enhances the performance or lows esteems of the college students. The increasing stress among college students is one of the alarming trends that have to be adequately addressed by a psychologist as the increased stress can lead these young people to adopt negative behaviors, such as committing suicides, alcohol consumption, drug addiction etc. This is because of the reason that the stress has detrimental effects on the physical and mental condition of the students (Newmann). There are three of the common stress that are frequently encountered by the college students, that is, Distress that causes the body to react in a negative way; Eustress is the positive stress that leads the individual to correspond the issues in effective manner and Traumatic stress is however less common than Eustress and Distress but has the greater impact on the cognitive and health condition of the individual. Traumatic stresses are the result of extreme mental and physical influences. Literature Review College student comes across several issues in this stage of life, due to which they are face, several forms of stress. The mainly personal stress college students face is the biological stress sources, emotional stress sources, spiritual stress sources and social and environmental stress sources. The main cause of the biological and social stress is an intense spiritual stress. According to the study of Rawson, the main cause of the mental stress of the college students evolves from the social factors, career actors, economic factors and study factors (Rawon and Bloomer). This is because of the reason that the students are the college life are highly concerned about their professional career (Hobsone). In 2011, Hong Ji and Lei Zhang highlights on of the most prevailing personal stress is the academic expectation and achievement of the students and social factor of the student that is to maintain the social connection (Ji and Zhang). The study makes use of the ‘scale for mental stresses of college students through the survey of the college student from seven different colleges. The finding of the study highlights that the college students mainly suffer from the personal stress that evolves from the family, stress from health, stress from cognitive abilities, relationships, low esteemed and frustration. In 2011, a study of Torres and Solberg investigates the causes of the personal stress and family support issues faced by the Latino college students to determine self-efficiency of the students. The finding of the study illustrates that the students that were reported to have stronger availability of the family support had the stronger self-efficacy than the student that do not have family support (Torres and Solberg). According to the study of Furong Wang and Huixiang Gong, the personal stress of the male students is higher, longer and stronger than the stress of female students (Wang and Gong). The study was conducted on the grounds of the comparative study analyzing mental stress of the college students from different colleges. the findings of the study illustrate the personal stress of the males is relatively higher than the females, as it grows along with the grades, that reaches maximum at junior and decreases at the senior level. In 2008, the study of Rose, Beibling and Heckret determined the major sources of the stress among the college students (Rose, Neibling, & Heckret). The study suggests that the main cause of the stress was due to the changing habits of the students that have caused the highest level of stress among the college students. In addition, the relationships had the greater influences on the emotional stress among the college students (Rose, Neibling, and Heckret). Discussion When the student initiate their high education, at this stage of life they encounter extremely inconsistence and nerve-racking struggle in their lives, this is one of the major reason of the several forms of the stress the college students come across. One of the high levels of stress they may encounter is because of the ‘university transition’, this is because of the reason that when the students’ graduate from high school they have to move away from schools and homes, due to which these students are often of their comfort zones when they displace or move to a new location. The homes are the comfort zone for them, as they have spent much of their times in their home with their parents and loved ones (Upton and Solowiej). The separation from their parents and the home makes develops stress among individuals to adjust themselves to the new situation and the college environment. On the contrary, there is a stress they encounter regarding the high performance and expectations of the parents about their academic performance. This puts the students in a pressure to study well and perform well; the students that have relatively low cognitive capabilities suffer through the situation. Some of the students exert immense pressure on himself or herself to study hard to attain higher grades (Wang and Gong). Therefore, they are more stressed due to which they are unable to retain the lectures in an effective manner. Wombel illustrates the relationship between emotional distress and psychological condition the students come across when they change their school. ‘Home’ and ‘school’ they spent more than 10 years of their lives embeds a sense of belonging and comfort among these students. The change in the schools and homes creates emotional distraction among these college students that either negative impacts on their academic performance. In addition, when the college students that have been achieving higher grades are laid greater expectations from their parent and teachers that also puts them in stress to maintain their grades and performance to meet their expectation. Moreover, high grades are perceived as a pride in the classroom. The students that are underachievers and have low grade because of their low cogitative capabilities suffer low esteem that eventual suppress their abilities. This is because of the reason that they feel left over and deprived regarding the attention they receive from others. There are certain students who have low cognitive capabilities that are in their heritage. These students struggle within their academic institutions as well as with the outside forces, that is, parents, peers and teachers (Holdsworth and Cartwright). Everyday, these students put themselves in stress to acquire a position in their academic performance. This stress can also harm their physical health as well their mental conditions. The stress can lead these students to move beyond their capabilities, such as low esteem or frustration to drop their further studies. Furthermore, college student put themselves in stress with their homework and the assignment they have been assigned by teachers. Sport activities, debates and other curriculum activities are a major attraction among the students. For example: the students that are a part of the football team of the school. They take pressure on themselves by doing extra efforts in the practices. Therefore, it is essential for the college students to learn how to control their stress and relieve heir stress at different phases of their lives. In addition, the student should be careful to identify their priorities between their academic and extra curriculum activities. Ever student suffers from stress that is normal for individuals during their lives at least for once in their lives. Putting themselves engaged in too many extra curriculum activates distracts students to focus on their academics as well as creates more stress in their lives. There are two types of the stress that the students experience in their lives; Adaptive stress is a source of energy for the students as they feel more alert and enthusiastic towards the challenges in their lives (Gouin, Kiecolt-Glaser, and Janice). This type of stress is affective and helps students to work better and faster than what others normally do. On the other hand, students also experience negative stress in their lives that leads them to eliminate relax periods. Therefore, these students are worried, irritated and frustrated. The anonymous worries about the home tasks and assignment create anxiety among the students; as a result they suffer of insomnia, restlessness and other health disorders. The stress that the student builds also causes too much work and stress that the students fail to complete the work in a proper manner. One of the other major causes of stress in the college student is due to their personal life and relationships. The breakup between their girlfriends and boyfriends is one of the leading sources of stress among the college students. A study in Minnesota surveyed about the hardest or bad experience they have been through. The study reveals that the most common bad times of their life was when they broke up with their boyfriends or girlfriends; it also influences their argument with their parents. The study also reveals about the different bad events that the student comes across was the increase argument between their parents, change in the parents, financial status, serious illness or injury, bulling with their classmate and trouble with their parents. The second most prominent issue the students had dealt was the social relations and their family economic status. This further added up their stress in the college students (Hobsone). Workload of the homework and school is also one of the major factors of the stress among the college students. Sometimes the teachers give too much work to the students and material that they feel so overwhelmed and confused with the material they are provided. Too much workload stresses student out because they are unable to spend time with their family and friends. Not spending time with their peers and family eventually distresses them to not to enjoy their lives. “On average students spend 3.07 hours at nights to complete their homework and assignments” and “60.3 percent of the college student have to drop an activity they enjoy just because they have to complete their homework” (Ji and Zhang). This shows that the students have to overcome their leisure times to meet their academic demands. The goal of the high school students is to have fun and during this period they have too much work load for the teachers to complete that stresses them due to which 2/3 of the students say that the homework keeps them away from sleeping (Hobsone). The students are unable to sleep at nights to learn new things and making new material for learning, as they have been remained inattentive in the classroom because of lack of sleep. The students explain the cause of their sleeplessness is the workload from their teachers. While there are other students that have other responsibilities such as: sports, work or to take care of their parent or siblings. This makes it difficult for them to manage their work and workload. This stresses the students with the schoolwork to put them in the state of depression. Therefore, the students have to find ways to manage the stress they receive from the school to manage their personal lives. Furthermore, the stress can affect the student in other negative ways, such as low sleep, health issues, eating disorder, anxiety, depression, anti socialism and giving up recreation. A lack of sleep can influence a student’s life by affecting students’ life, as they are unable to concentrate on the lectures, participation and discussion in the classrooms as the fall sleep in the classroom. In addition, the student that feels stress, they begin to consume more food and unhealthy food that they normally do in order to reduce their stress level. This may lead to obsession and eating disorder among the students. In addition, students who are stressed out start consuming alcohol and other drugs that can be harmful to their health and mental condition. Conclusion: Analyzing the information, it can be concluded that the personal stress of the students causes negative and positive impacts on the cognitive and academic performance of the students. the emotional stress of the students also affects the health of students. There are several ways of the students to overcome the stress. One of the strategies that the student may adopt is to omit one or two tougher courses in their lives. It is also suggested that the parents and school official should not put extra works on the students. In addition, school counseling for the students should be effective. The meditation session for the students can be an effective opportunity for the students should be provided before or after school to release stress.
