The therapy is to prepare them for the impairments, grief, and loss one will experience and the best way to deal with them and avoid depression or suicidal thoughts (Fine, 2013). When the patient has enough knowledge about the illness and is aware of what they will go through, acceptance starts sinking in and the reaction to the loss will not be as severe as one who has little or no knowledge whatsoever. The grief will not be long-lasting and the patient will cope better with it if it comes (Mauritz and Meijel, 2009).

There are medications for the severe cases of depression. To prevent suicide, the patient can be restrained and put under medication until the risk passes. The greatest treatment is having a strong social support system. Social support lessens feelings of loss and grief and enables quick coping. Observing others with the same mental illness as well as interacting with them and their social support will also make acceptance quicker and reduce the risks of depression and suicide (Congress and Gonzalez, 2005).
