The relationship with Freudian ideas of the unconscious - Essay Example

Instruction: Task: Freudian Relationship Psychology is an important area of study for human beings and society. This is because it evaluates and examines the mental processes of individuals in relation to their actions and feelings. Notable psychologists include Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung among others who helped in understanding the human mind. However, theories of the conscious and unconscious presented by Freud have stuck because of both their relevance and significance in society (Freud 16).

Sigmund Freud is a respected psychoanalyst credited for his discoveries in the realms of the conscious and unconscious. Human beings are known to experience Freudian slip. According to psychologists, these are revelations about feelings or unconscious thoughts. For instance, it happens when a young man confuses the name of his new date with the name of his former girlfriend. However, while this may be deemed as a simple error on the part of the young man, psychoanalytic experts hold a different view (Freud 45).

Freudians posit that it arises out of inner forces beyond human control. It affects human awareness hence leading to wrong utterances. In that case, psychoanalysts may link the remarks to misgivings or unresolved feelings of the past affair. Similarly, the unconscious mind of Freud suggests it is made up of urges, thoughts, and feelings beyond the conscious awareness of a human being. In that context, unconsciousness has unpleasant or unacceptable feelings of anxiety, pain, fears or conflict.

However, Freud argued that the unconsciousness continues to affect human behavior, influence and experience in their regular interactions. Criticized for lack of proof and validity, the theory of the unconsciousness helped others scholars of psychology in their researches. Cognitive processes, according to Freud, affect the unconsciousness of an individual through direct and indirect actions as noted in the young man noted above (Freud 52). In the same view, Freudian belief in the power of the unconsciousness affects operations of attitudes, memory and motivation in human beings.

Conscious state is also known to affect the unconscious self. For example, experiences and feelings are remembered or reproduced without awareness. This leads to a fugitive condition of the consciousness in what Freud argued only happens for a moment. Conversely, it may lead to contradictions and wrong perceptions in the mind of the individual. This is brought by stimuli affecting both behavior and human perception in the intellective processes of human beings. However, according to Freudian ideas, unconscious has a related behavior not affected by mental processes (Freud 59).

According to psychoanalysts, mental material has large impact on the consciousness especially in personal actions and feelings. Unconsciousness, according to Freud, demanded the discovery, translation and inference of the consciousness. This leads to what is called unconscious proper affecting the feelings and actions of people with sound mental processes. Theories of the unconscious are also linked to consciousness when individuals are having dreams (Freud 67). Thoughts and actions conceived during the day are relayed in imaginary worlds of dreams.

In that case, Freudian ideas in relation to unconscious being helps in understanding actions and feelings guided by the unconscious (Freud 42).
