Article review Introduction This paper offers a review to the article, ‘Effect of alcohol consumption on young women’s behavior,’ as was ed by Va and published by Nursing Standard in 2008. Information about the author of the study The author of the study is a senior lecturer in the University of Manchester, department of midwifery. This identifies a level of professionalism and an intellectual approach to the study and the study’s methodology is expected to generate valid and reliable results (Va 35).
Objectives of the study The study explores two objectives. One of its objectives is to investigate the impacts of “alcohol consumption on the sexual behavior of women aged between 16- 24 years” (Va 36). The study’s second objective is to investigate existence of a relationship between alcohol consumption among the women and their susceptibility to Chlamydia trachomatis infections (Va 36). Methodologies of the study The study applied a non-experimental design in which data was collected regarding the participants’ observations on their lives.
There was no involved treatment. Further, the study applied a simple random sampling approach in which a sample was selected from members of the target group who registered at a care facility. The lack of criterion for selecting the study sample has an advantage of eliminating bias towards reliability of the research findings. The study also applied questionnaires as data collection instruments. These were self administered by the participants following their voluntary consent. The collected data was then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively (Va 36, 37).
The experiment’s results About 208 participants completed the questionnaires. The results from the study show that the of age at which the women started drinking range from three and a half years to 18 years. About 23 percent of the participants began drinking at the age 14 while 37 percent of the women reported to have started consuming alcohol by their thirteenth birthday. The respondents’ statistics also show that the youngest of the women is the one who started drinking at the lowest age.
The results also identify relationship between age and the level of alcohol consumption in which the participants’ age is inversely proportional to the amount of alcohol that they consume during typical and heavy drinking. In both situations, the results identify significance of the relationships with low probability values of 0.01 and 0.02 for normal and heavy drinking respectively. In the respective cases, the results identify regression coefficients of 0.37 units and 0.52 units for normal and heavy drinking nights.
This identifies a trend in increasing level of consumption among the younger women. Similarly, the results identify alcohol consumption among the women as a contemporary issue because more than 70 percent of the women had at least consumed alcohol within the previous seven days to the research. Adverse effects of drinking are also identified among the women (Va 37- 40). Conclusions about the experiment The research concludes that alcohol consumption is significant among the women and is more realized among younger women.
Even though many of the women are aware of the negative effects of the consumption, they do not consider them as risk factors to their lives. The research methodology and the researcher’s professional credibility identify reliability and validity of the research findings towards making inferences, and implementation in clinical care.
