Piaget and Vygotskys Theories Piaget and Vygotskys Theories of Childhood Development Both Piaget and Vygotsky suggested highly influential theories that discuss the early learning and development in children (Oates, 2005). Piaget theory is characterized by certain defined rigid stages. His ideas have a monumental impact on the teaching methods around the world and provide the framework necessary for understanding the cause of the changes in cognitive functions of children. However, his theory’s postulation that cognitive development occurs mechanically is not applicable in real life as children do not develop abruptly from one stage to another; development is a complicated process.

His theory also underestimated the cognitive ability of infants and children. Accounting for the individual differences is quite difficult because most of the differences occur at an early stage. The theory also includes fewer explanations on the emotional or social, development and the problems associated with development. Vygotsky’s theory has paramount contribution to education growth. It is true that cooperation during role play achieves better results. Early parental support also contributes to better performance in future.

However, the concepts described by Vygotsky’s theory contain less scientific evidence to support or contradict his claims. The theory seems to ignore development aspects with too much focus on social-cultural interactions. The theory also lacks vivid explanation of the developmental challenges as well as the individual differences. Although the two theories describe early childhood development, they are differentiated by a number of ideas. Vygotskys theory is characterized by a social cultural view while Piaget’s theory holds a cognitive development view.

According to Vygotsky, development in children is driven by the input from other people and more knowledgeable ones (MKO’s) while Piaget posits that development occurs owing to conflict between stages. Vygotsky views learning in children as a social process while Piaget considers learning as solitary with children being lone scientists. The context of development according to Vygotsky is different depending on social and cultural forces while Piaget asserts that development is universal, and the stages are similar regardless of context.

Piaget’s theory asserts that development precedes learning and thought drives language while Vygotsky asserts that language is driven by thought and learning precedes development (Oates, 2005).
