In the first experiment, Chastain selected one exposure duration for every subject that yielded an overall proportion correct of approximately .55 with regard to letters, and roughly .55 for forms. In order to come up with a proportion correct of about .65 for forms, a dissimilar duration was chosen. The expectation was a predominance of mislocations on intrusions with letters, not with forms at either level of accuracy (Chastain, 1995).

The entire process was repeated for the second experiment with and without prior familiarization with the forms, upon the learning of the labels. The only exception was that the keys that were of were the top eight, that is; 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8. Additionally, the key replicas of the letters were made to appear from left to right and in alphabetical sequence. The reason was that if the sequence of errors is highly attributed to labeling, the same must be manifest with forms that have already been branded or labeled (Chastain, 1995).

Interestingly, the first experiment revealed that the dissimilarity is neither a culmination of differing overall levels of accuracy nor the duration of exposure of the two types of characters. The findings of the second experiment on the other hand disclosed that in relation to the absence of experience, prior experience with the forms by way of familiarization or learning labels for them brought forth mislocation along with intrusion frequencies bearing resemblance to those of the letters. The noticeable change was linked to the development of stored representations for forms seen as similar to those of the letters, subject to the same factors producing mislocation as well as intrusion patterns for the cases. But Chastain noted that it is physical, not phonetic similarity, which influenced patterns with briefly presented arrays of letters. On top of that, there can exist codes forms without labels involving physical formats, not the name ones (Chastain, 1995). These are some of the evidence which is not supportive of the feature analysis theory of object recognition.
