Discuss the Different parenting styles and the complexities Different parenting styles and the complexities/diversity of understanding parenting stylesWhile growing up, a child’s conduct is influenced by many factors, ranging from the community, friends and family (Barkway, 2009, P. 30). However, the child is mostly affected by the parenting styles used on him or her. This is because; these will also determine to what extent he gets affected by his or her peers.Different parents use different parenting styles including permissive or indulgent, neglectful or uninvolved parenting, authoritarian parenting and authoritative parenting.
Permissive or indulgent parentingPermissive parenting is a style of parenting where the child is permitted to do whatever he or she wants to do, and the parent does not try to control their behaviour. Under this style also, the child is given a lot of freedom and is not disciplined in case of acute manners. Research has indicated that this style of parenting could make the child develop severe and uncontrollable behaviours (Jauregui, Bolanos & Garrido, 2011, P. 733). Still, most parents reported to prefer using this style on teenagers so as to limit their stubbornness.
Neglectful or UninvolvedIn neglectful parenting style, the parent does not support or accept the behaviour of his or her child, but still, he or she does not try to control the child’s behaviour. This style is not recommendable since it could have negative effects on the parent, such as stress. AuthoritarianIn authoritarian parenting, the parent is impassive to the child’s behaviour while he or she tries to control what the child does. In this case, the parent makes the rules all the time, and the child rarely has a say in what the parent decides.
This method of parenting is not healthy since it creates fear and anxiety on the child (Barkway, 2009, P. 32).AuthoritativeAuthoritative parenting is receptive and responsive to the child. The parent in this case allows the child to make their preferences and also listens to their children’s opinions. This is the most recommended parenting style since it promotes healthy relations between the child and the parent. The child is also able to become a responsible person without having to be controlled by the parent (Jauregui, Bolanos & Garrido, 2011, P. 733).In spite of the fact that different parents will apply different parenting styles on their children, one thing which is clear is that the relationship between the parent and the child matters immensely.
Barkway states that a harsh environment between the parent and the child will not be beneficial to either of the two parties.ReferencesBarkway, P. 2009, Psychology for Health Professionals, Australia, Elsevier AustraliaJauregui, L., Bolanos, R., & Garrido, C. 2011, Parenting styles and eating disorders, Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, 18(8), 728–735
