The world is fast paced towards embracing globalization, which means that people are using social media and social networks to interact. This has resulted into multiculturalism where people from different backgrounds and cultures have heightened their levels of interactions. Collaborations between multiculturalists have created emerging issues, such as racism and cultural identity crisis. Culture defines people’s behavior and personality, thus, cultural identity on the larger side embraces such aspects that make people unique from each other (Barnett, Wise, Johnson & Bucky, 2007, p. 182). The values and traditions, which people hold on to, are core to them, since they define their diversity among multiple groups of human beings.

When people from these diverse cultures meet, they socialize and even get assimilated, while at the same time they make attempts to maintain their authentic cultural identities. Efforts to maintain cultural identity often lead to aggression and it has been cited as a possible cause of rejection where one community denies the other the right to association. Rejection of one culture may make it difficult for people to be productive at work places, thus, psychological counseling becomes paramount.

Likewise, the mere fear of rejection or association with negativity may cause despair among people who are torn between choosing their own culture over that of others for instance their neighbors. The whole situation causes what is referred to as cultural identity crisis and this negatively affects culturally diverse sets of people.Issues of cultural identity crisis may have an impact on the future of professional psychology training and practices in that identity crisis may end up dictating people’s lifestyles, eating habits and to some extent the types of clothes that people wear.

Furthermore, people tied to cultural identity are often estranged in ethical dilemma where they have to choose between what they actually prefer for themselves and what their immediate cultures demand of them (Arnett, 2008, p. 603). They thus end up being cultural slaves where they have to choose between fulfilling the expectations of the host culture or be neglected against. This means that psychologists will be forced to encompass such topics on cultural identity in their lessons so as to properly guide and motivate those people who are facing such challenges as neglect or cultural negativity.

Racism is another emerging trend or issue that is fast taking roots among psychological professions. Racism which can be defined as an act of favoring ones race against another and it is among the leading causes of inequality in the modern society. The vice has been embraced mostly by communists thought capitalist countries, such as US, have been identified with such a negative impact (Carter & Abeles, 2009, p. 11). Racism creates an attitude towards individual members of other groups making it almost impossible to progress in such an economy.

The mind of a racist is built on a foundation of ignorance which does not recognize merit but physical characteristics, skin color and similarity of cultures. Racism at its worst can cause verbal abuse, obscene gestures and racial slurs. Outward actions of racism may hamper good living among several other generations to come.Racism affects relations between diverse cultural groups of people. There are possible setbacks that may only be noticed by the recipients but may be invisible to the third party that the act is being done against.

Such actions have been referred to as micro-aggressions and they strain people’s relationships and self-esteem as well. In the long run racism may ruin psychological imbalance of the third parties leading them into internalizing their feelings into hatred which can lead to suicide cases. It is therefore pertinent for cultural psychologists to take into consideration such issues as racism and cultural identity crisis. The overall result is need for a complete overhaul in the way professional counseling is conducted.
