Topic: Time out Technique as a Parenting style Parenting a child is a process which has to be undergone by all the people at some point of their life time. It is a crucial phase in anybody’s life and every parent enjoy this moment from their heart as an experiencing event. The well being and personality of any child depends on the parenting technique and methods utilized by parents in upbringing their children. Parents adopt many methods to control and mold their children, while the attempts can be successful only if the child is responsive to these techniques. It should be noted by any parent while adopting parenting methods to make it less delicate and coercive with the children. It is understandable that children are less easy to be controlled, but their mental and physical well being is more important than just discipline in life. Parenting is the process wherein the child is molded by the parents in a caring manner .Parenting is not an easy task, even though the emotional bond between the child and the parent is strong. It can be ironical in saying that as the parent and child are strongly connected the parenting technique has to be well scrutinized and experimented. There are different methods in which a parent can displace their child .Different kinds of parenting are positive parenting, spiritual parenting, unconditional parenting, time out parenting and so on. One of the parenting styles followed by parents nowadays is the time out parenting technique and a look in to the same subject can give us an idea about its good and bad side. The Concept of Time out Parenting Time out parenting is one technique which is most widely accepted by the parents worldwide. In this method the child is trained to stay away from parents in order to learn discipline and ordain in life. Here the child is trained to stay away from the parents and this is applied in cases where the child is mostly behaving in an inappropriate manner. According to (Farlane) “Time-out is a discipline technique that involves placing children in a very boring place for several minutes following unacceptable behaviors. Time-out really means time out from any attention”. The parents have an assumption that when children stay near them they tend to get spoiled. This concept of time out parenting was invented by Arthur stats after a long term behavioral analysis with his children. This kind of parenting is a way of treating children against their misbehavior and misconduct. However this parenting style is not very amicable with grooming children as it leaves negative consequences on child. In this case the parent does not evaluate the child but forces them to stay aloof from home. As the word is getting modernized parents choose this method in order to save their time spent in grooming children. This kind of parenting is suitable for children who are toddlers and are at a tender age. Advantages of Time out Parenting Method The advantage of time out parenting method is that it is a considerably effective in disciplining children who are out of conduct. “The point of timeout is to remove the child from a situation for a long enough periods for the child to calm down and reflect on his actions”. Children who are misbehaving needs to be kept away from parents as this would give them some fear of punishment. If the children do not fear punishment then there are chances that they influence the parents to fall according to their whims and fancies. Most children throw tantrums at the sight of their parents which can create obstacles in good parenting system. In time out parenting, since children are apart from parents there are less chance of them getting too much pampered at their hands .This parenting technique is advised to be used by all adults as the result of it is worthwhile. Time out parenting method is also useful in saving the time of parents who are often professionals in their daily life. Time out parenting method is useful if the child is dis – oriented and miss- directed. Children need to be shown limits when it comes to manners and behaviors so this method are suggested as the best way to tame them. This is also an effective parenting method where the parents can relax and calm themselves. Also children suffering from Attention Deficiency Disorders are also highly benefited from this parenting method. When children are away from parents, they are also saved from hitting and spanking. Disadvantages of Time out Method The most striking disadvantage of time out method is that it is a severe means of disciplining children. This kind of parenting even though helpful to parents can hurt the children in the long run. The ease in achieving discipline among children with the use of time out method can be in real sense destroying the lives of children in the long run. It is widely seen that children raised away from parents tend to be more self – centered and mentally disturbed. It is a negative punishment to children to be severed them from parents in the name of punishment. A child needs to be raised in an environment with attachment and bonds. If this is lacking in their life, then the child can grow up to have personality disorders. A child who has been disciplined with time out method is more likely to lose their talents and skills due to intimidation and punishment fear. When child is raised by this method, the parents fail to observe the potential and strengths in them. Children are mostly in tender age when they are under time out method and can get confused as to their position in life. If a child has extrovert nature, then he might feel disturbed and suffocated in this parenting method, which can impact on their growth and development. This even can be seen as a parenting method where parents are benefited more than the misbehaving children. It also can increase animosity between siblings as they have to struggle for the love of their parents. Best Way to Parent a Child Mostly parents choose time out method to get their child disciplined in a short time and with less effort. Parents being caring to children, want them to be lead an orderly life at an early age. This is a well wishing gesture of parents but the effect of such short cut parenting methods can be harmful to the kids in the current and future state. So the best form of parenting a child is to give utmost care and love to them and then to make their life creative by being a good parent. A child being innocent at the early years of life can be easily trained with good qualities with a little effort from the parents. A child can only grow perfectly under the observance of parents. A young age is when a child requires all the love and care from parents and if this is lacking, then the child can become self – centered. Most parents fail to understand the need and wants of their child and struggle to find ways to restore their behaving pattern and mode of life. A child in early stages needs to live a life which is less restricted as they should be given time to explore their likes and dislikes. Love and care is the utmost ingredient in nurturing a child .The main issue with the parents of these days are they have minimum time to spend on children due to their relentless profession. It is mandatory for parents to allot enough time to children to understand and observe their behavioral pattern to mold them appropriately. Conclusion Parenting is a crucial issue in the life of a married couple and a lot of research needs to be done to ensure that the right style of parenting is used to encourage the well being of children. Children need grooming, but it should not be at the cost of their mental health and wellbeing. Parents need to understand that the children at young age are prone to insecurity if they are isolated from the parents. The tender age of a child is a foundation stage for their overall well being and if child lacks attention and care from parents their behavior can get more disoriented. When it comes to time out method, if it is used in an appropriate manner the child can be disciplined as and when required by the parents. If the child is enormously misbehaving then they can be wonderfully parented by parents with the time out parenting method. Still the upbringing of the child seriously depends on the attitude of the parents as the method of parenting has less to do with it. How much ever excellent is the parenting method, the child only get accustomed to those behaviors which are lovingly and genuinely imparted by their parents. Parents essentially, need to understand that the children absorb behavioral aspects from their surrounding and a happy family can bring forth a happy and disciplined child. Farlane, Natasha M.
