The APA guidelines also give strict ways of capturing, handling, and housing animals. According to Rollin (1998), such care will ensure that the use of animals for testing is accomplished without torturing the animals. If allowed, animal research should extend from research that investigates cures for terminal illnesses to any research that has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards (I.R.Bs.). However, a justification for the use of these animals, and not non-animal alternatives, should also be given by the I.R.B. by the specific institution.

            Using animals for research is different from using animals for food in that using them for food entails killing the animals quickly. This means the animals are subjected to pain for the shortest time possible and neither do they suffer from any effects later on. On the other hand, using them for research involves injecting chemical substances into the animals and performing experiments on them. This means the animals are subjected to prolonged pain. Most of these animals do not die in the process and might have to cope with deformities or loss of some organs for the rest of their lives.
