Counseling Techniques Full During my Chat interview with the client, I discovered how I was struggling with my communication skills, unable to put the right words together to form well-constructed questions in order to get all the necessary information from the counselee. The client was quite able to open himself to others which helped a lot in the conversation because I did not need to think of more profound questions to ask. I can foresee what could be the greatest problem I will encounter if I deal with clients who are not open or well-versed in expressing themselves.

I believe I have to work more on constructing questions, encouraging phrases showing my interest and not just limit to the words “go on”. In line with my communication skills, I was not able to ‘listen’ well to the client as I was already trying to picture his situation in my mind. There have been words the counselee used which could have been implicative of her greater issues than what she was telling me in general but I overlooked all these. I failed to read her message between the lines so consequently, I failed to give the best guidance I should have offered.

I missed empathizing with the client which I believe was a very important matter in the process of counseling. In addition, since I was not able to determine the specific problems, I was not also able to give solutions to the counselee’s concerns brought to my attention. Truly, the client had more of the speaking out in the process however, but I was not able to phrase my questions in such a way that I would be able to get to the main problem. One of my weaknesses is understanding what approach I was to use in relation to the aforementioned problems I encountered.3. Being an introvert, I am not one who communicates in an eloquent manner as other people do.

In fact, I do not deal much with other people which I see to be a factor that affected my communication skills a lot, not able to express myself in an organized and well-stated manner. This also makes me unable to see other people in their own statements rather make my own conclusions and images about what or who they are as I understand from my point of view. Communication skills is truly what is limiting me in the interview process because how I communicate my ideas is affecting how other people communicate their ideas to me as well.

I see that even if a client is a good speaker, if I am not able to get my point straight to the counselee in my way of questioning, I would not be able to get the desired information. Being the introvert that I am, I guess I was not used to asking a lot of questions. My meditations are more concentrated on my inner self that I could easily relate with other people of similar circumstances that I am going or have gone through but I struggle in understanding other situations that I have not experienced.

Probably, if I come to meet other people, listen to them and reflect on their experiences, I might be able to widen my understanding of the world and other people, helping me in this profession have chosen. As I tend to see the big picture and unable to focus on details, my line of questioning is not smoothly performed. For instance, looking at a person, I asked about his eyes, next his hands then I go back to his eyes. In other words, I am not well-organized so that if I determined the problem in a wide scope, I tend to go away from it because there are other problems I see that I think need attention as well.
