Interview Guide Interview Guide Overview of the Scenario As a psychology I am preparing to interview an outsider who suffers from chronic headaches. As such, in the course of planning and preparation, I am presenting the details necessary prior to the actual interview. Purpose of the Interview The purpose of the interview is to solicit as much crucial information to identify the root cause for the subject’s chronic headaches so as to come up with a comprehensive outlook as to the cause of this ailment, and try to find out the best course of action that would assist the subject or any other who might be suffering from the same, in coping and handling their situation.

Planned procedure during the Interview The topics that would be covered as well as the corresponding sequence are itemized below: 1. Delivery of appropriate greetings; 1.1 I introduce myself stating my occupation and purpose for the interview. To make the subject fully acquainted; 2. I ask how the subject is; her full name and occupation. 3. I seek to solicit information from the subject; 4. The subject is given the opportunity to relay information regarding her as per the questions I ask. 5.

I acknowledges and pry, depending on the relayed information; 6. I offer the proposed way forward as per my background research on the subject matter to improve grades and validate the agreement through signed conformity; 7. Closing remarks and good-byes. Questions to Obtain the Information The proposed questions to obtain the needed information are as follows: What was it like being you? What do you expect from life? What problems have you encountered in your life? Have you ever had difficulty relating with people?

What can you say about your love life? Describe your ideal partner? Why do you think you have been having headaches? What medication have you been taking when a headache occurs? Do you read a lot? What kind of material do you read? What form of entertainment is your favorite? What is your greatest social skill and why do you think it is so? What is your weak point in social skill and why? How would you describe yourself? Describe a typical life week. How many hours do you normally rest listen to music or something of the sort to relax your mind?

Do you participate in sports or physical activities? if yes, how frequent? How well do you handle stress and pressure? Do you live alone? Do you love pets? If yes, do you have one? What motivates you in life? Opening Techniques to Build Rapport My opening techniques to build rapport are as follows: (1) I will start with appropriate greetings: Good afternoon, how is your day proceeding? (2) How are you feeling? (3) What is your favorite part of the day, mornings, afternoons or evenings? Why? (4) Are you having any headache?

Does it occur during any particular time of the day or during any particular activity? Do you have any discomfort or problems with any person especially those involved in your daily routine? (5) Can you tell me, why do you think you have these chronic headaches? Types and Examples of Questions to Avoid The types of questions that I will avoid are those that put blame on the subject thus placing her on the defensive or close-ended questions such as: Did you have these headaches because you don’t know how to cope with stress?

Or – Your chronic headaches might be as a result of drug and substance abuse. Such structured questions will put the subject on the defensive, thus I will not yield the accurate root cause of information for the subject’s headaches since I put blame on her. My goal of the interview is to get the correct and informative information for the subject’s headaches. Thus, I have to use effective communication techniques: appropriate tonal variation, objectivity, empathy and conveying the message that is to be of assistance to curb the subject’s chronic headaches.

My success in the interview depends on the type of questions I will ask and my prior preparation, which will help me ensure my objective is appropriately attained. Analysis Summary Headaches and luck of sleep are very common among adults especially in this day and age due to the fast pace of life – almost all people at least at some point suffer from headache and lack of sleep. This situation can disappear on its own or through the help of medication like pain relievers and sleeping pills. Despite the fact that many headaches are relatively mild, some people like my subject, have headaches which can be so severe that they completely lack sleep thus needing psychological and medical attention (Dick, 2002).

Adult women (like my subject) go through headache experiences more as compared to adult men; this is in most cases associated with the menstrual cycle. The good thing is that with advancing age, she will have fewer headaches which are severe, and difficulties in sleeping will cease. There are various forms which headaches come with: these are cluster, sinus, migraine and tension headaches. In few cases, headaches and lack of sleep may be symptoms of a more severe condition which needs prompt medication (Trochim, 2002).
