Psychology Assignment Assignment I: Working with Pain Emotional pain is a feeling of vulnerability and loss in the event of a major crisis in one’s life. In its gamut, it includes a feeling of losing a part of oneself, loss of control and brokenness. Emotional pain is considered a consequence of living in a complicated world resulting from the tendency of people denying or avoiding painful feelings. Working with pain is considered by clinicians as an important step in inducing the necessary changes in the inner self and eventually in a person’s ability to cope with wife in more satisfying and healthier ways. Major components of emotional pains are considered to be a profound sense of meaninglessness, despair, isolation and hopelessness. Emotional pain tends to isolate one from the contemporary flow of events with one often feeling abandoned or left alone. Coming from a country in which going to the army is compulsory, I have been recently faced by touch decision of deciding whether to go or not, and how to go about it. The problem is what happens in the event that I fail a mandatory medical test administered before one is allowed to go to the army. Recently, this thought and decision is affecting my mindset, and therefore, causing me emotional pain. However, I believe I have been able to go through various phases associated with working with emotional pain. I have embraced my pain by telling the truth about it, I have opted to do something positive with my pain and released the negative emotions I had held. One thing that I have since been unable to understand is how to derive the benefits associated with pain. I believe I need to learn more about how to consider pain as a source of new vitality, energy and a new positive way of experiencing life; and make it more effective. Despite the fact the fact that emotional pain might be unpleasant in the short-run, it can, in the long-run, be beneficial. Emotional pain tells us that there is something wrong our lives that need changing. Emotional pain main spur one to re-examine his or her life in terms of values, goals, and needs in search for relief. This discomfort associated with pain may also motivate one to try and find out what is wrong before it is too late. Deriving the benefits of emotional pain means that, it can make one healthier, stronger, more compassionate to individuals and wiser. It is clear that identifying and understanding one’s pain earlier enough may help make a difference before it is too late. One difficult thing with regards to deriving the benefits of pain is how to handle the discomfort associated with it. D4: A summary of "Working with Pain" Currently, I am at a stage of trying to derive the benefits of pain, learning more about how to consider pain as a source of new vitality, energy, and a new positive way of experiencing life; and how to make it more effective. In the past, I have experienced emotional pain, more specifically, with regards to having a feeling of isolation, feeling abandoned or left alone. The issue is that, at this point in my life, I did not understand any how to work with pain. I had no idea as to how I could embrace my pain, do something positive with it, shun negative emotions associated with it, or derive the benefits associated with it. Currently, I am experiencing emotional pain the form of a feeling hopelessness, confusion and meaninglessness. I have been able to embrace my pain, opted to do something positive with my pain and released the negative emotions I had held about. The next step is to try and understand how to derive the benefits associated with pain. I believe I need to learn more about how to consider pain as a source of new vitality, energy and a new positive way of experiencing life; and make it more effective Assignment 2: D5 – Gender Role Journey According to the results of Gender Role Journey Measure, GRJM assessment, it suggests that, most certainly, I am currently experiencing the Acceptance of Traditional Gender Roles, based on its 3.8 score and rank order 1. Additionally, the assessment suggests that, the second Gender Role Journey phase that I close resemble, or may be currently experiencing is the Gender Role Ambivalence, Confusion, Anger and Fear, based on the 3.3 measure score and rank order 2. The analysis of these results suggest that there is no clear distinction between the two phases, as to which phase I may be closely resembling or experiencing at this time. I think I currently best fit in the Gender Role Ambivalence, Confusion, Anger and Fear phase since I am experiencing dissatisfaction with current definitions of gender roles. Additionally, there is clear and increased awareness with regards to sexism and gender roles are problematic or violate other people. Persons in this phase are confused as to why they are angry about sexism and have fears with regards to questioning why gender roles are currently restrictive, or are changing (O’Neil and Egan 115-117). However, the question that struck me is why it that in this phase, people feel is angry, confused and afraid. Why is it that persons in this phase may be uncertain of what they want to do despite having a desire to do something with regards to sexism? Why do People in Gender Role Ambivalence, Confusion, Anger and Fear Phase need to change their gender roles, leave alone, need help for that matter? D6 – Wounded Person Cycle I have been on the wounded person cycle in the past and currently am. The wounded person’s cycle tries to explain the negative effects of unresolved pain, rage or anger. Currently, I am in the second step, Step 2, of the wounded person cycle, transitioning into Step 3. I am experiencing emotional pain and am in confusion still trying to understand why I am experiencing the pain, how it came about. Currently, I am confused about the question of when and how to go about going to the military given that it is mandatory. Holding on to unresolved anger, rage or pain can result in adverse negative consequences such as negatively and permanently changing a person or a person reinjuring him or herself, and can lead one to do something they would have not wished such as commit a serious crime. Holding in to unresolved anger, pain or rage can set us on an ever downward spiral, and slowly drag as to the rock bottom.
