? Suicide in Adult Men Suicide in Adult Men This paper specifically talks about suicide in adult men. The paper is organized in a hierarchical order in which the introductory part of the paper defines suicides and then discusses the issues surrounding suicide. Psychology of the suicide is also discussed in this relation and the psychological operation that is necessitated by depression leading to commitment of suicide is discussed. Following is the relationship between suicide and gender, here the cases of suicide by number are considered between men and women. The literature then covers the propagating factors for suicide in adult men coupled with the cause of the rising cases of suicide among the adult men. Finally, this paper looks at some of the barriers that are associated by the male sin attempt to treat depression, which is the precursor to suicide. The Psychology of Suicide The conventional definition of suicide is the deliberate effort to take one’s own life. Understanding suicide can be a simple or a complex issue that compares life itself. Summarily, it can be accurately be concluded that for one to take his/her life through suicide, there must have been the evaluation of the exercise vis a vis the physical or psychological dilemma and the outcome of the process favoring suicide and not dealing with the problems in finding other forms of solutions (Consumer Health News, 2010). It has been found that the psychology of suicide is anchored in depression, it is therefore important that whoever is investigating suicide cases must consider the clinical and the investigative facts in equal measure (States News Service, 2011). Most often, a note is found written by a suicide victim explaining reasons for the act. Almost all the suicide notes give a clear indication that the victim suffered a severe depression before taking his/her life away. Depression to not discriminate on age or gender, it affects a like and has contributed to substantial number of suicides in the world. In this reference, depression forms the primary motivation for committing suicide, it can be defines as the disturbances of mood usually characterized by despair, sadness, and discouragement occasioned by personal tragedy or loss (Politics & Government Week, 2012). The state of depression always makes the feeling of despair, sadness, and discouragement be proportionally out of control leading to and this is what leads to suicide. The depressive symptoms can be classified in four cardinal clusters; cognitive, motivational, somatic, and emotional. All the clusters of the depressive symptoms do have dependent and independent impact on the individual depressed (Consumer Health News, 2012). The clusters affect each other in a cascading manner and this aggravates the extent of the depressive effects. The emotional and the cognitive clusters eventually make the motivational symptom to take the suicidal option what is clinically referred to as ‘the paralysis of the will’ sometimes referred to as the psychomotor retardation (Consumer Health News, 2012). The affection of the psychomotor is always manifested in the depressed persons by slow movements and other physical changes, these changes are referred to as somatic symptoms (South Wales Echo, 2010). Suicide and Gender Following the successfully investigation about suicide and gender by the sociologists, it has been found that the number of men committing suicides in higher than that of women by almost three to five folds depending on the geographical region one is interested in. Ironically the number of reported suicidal cases attempts in females are higher than that of men. The number of the males committing suicides attains peak at two stages in life, during teenage (20-27 years) and during the old age (65 years and above) (Health & Medicine Week, 2008). In the United States, the ration of the males to female suicide is oscillating between 3:1 and in some states 10:1. Further studies have indicated that this disparity is brought about by the fact that men do not consider ‘crying out for help’ as an effective way of dealing with depression or psychological problems. Other studies have also indicated that men are likely to brutally end their lives compared to women who always resort to less virulent methods like overdose and so on (NewsRx Health, 2008). Reasons for Suicide in Adult Men Men in the age of 65 and above have been noted to have higher possibilities of committing suicide because of the nature of the occupation they are involved into. For instance, some farmers do work for long hours alone and are not married. In most cases, these people always have access to suicidal material like poisonous weed killers and shotgun to facilitate the exercise (Gonzales, 2000). Away from that, chronic illness is also blamed for the increased suicide among the adult men. Chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and arthritic inflict pain and suffering leading to accumulated depression that is always substituted by suicide (Gonzales, 2000). Social isolation is another factor that promotes suicide among this group of people, the situation might have arisen due to being widowed or not being able to marry. They do not interact and share with other people and in cases of depression, their only option is suicide. Causes of Rising Cases of Suicide in Men The rising cases of suicide in men can be attributed to some of the challenges they meet in life. Unlike long ago, today men realize substantial obstacles in realizing their academic goals than women. They are therefore stressful because of not being successful. Drug abuse and alcoholic consumption as stress neutralizers are much witnessed in men than in women. There have also been changes in the society referred to as ‘breakdown of the society’ this includes divorce and falling attendance in the church (Consumer Health News, 2009). Barriers to Effective Treatment of Depression in Men Even though men experience the highest number of causality in suicide predominantly caused by depression, they show reasonable resistance to the treatment of depression at the same time. This is attributed to the following; chances are that men will not recognize that they are not happy and that they are stressed, they seldom consult with their doctors in cases of distress (South Wales Echo, 2003). In the cases that they consult form the doctors, they will be complaining about vague symptoms relating to physical pain and the rest. Finally health professional are always reluctant to diagnose mental illness in men and this contributes to the aggravation of the mental condition because of the assumption.
