?Snoodle Snoodle’s personality seems to be greatly influenced by his experiences and thus we can use Rotter’s theory of personality to explain it. This theory states that personality is shaped by accumulation of experience and can be learned and modified by new experiences (Ashcraft 122). At the beginning of the video, Snoodle believes that he can fly because he has wings and he can sing. However, because of his experience with people who demoralize him he sees himself as someone who cannot fly. His experience with other people makes him to believe that he cannot be able to use his wings to fly. This impact varies greatly to his personality and thus makes him even to dislike interacting with other people. This is what makes him go to the mountain to meet the mountain man. His experience with the mountain man greatly shapes his personality, making him able to fly for long distance and to feel great about himself. To test whether Snoodle’s personality correspond with the description given by Rotter’s theory of personality, we use a projective test. According to Coon and Mitterer (420), projective test seeks to uncover deeply hidden or unconscious wishes thoughts and needs. From the video, we can derive that Snoodle had several deeply hidden and unconscious wishes, thoughts and needs one of them being the wish to fly like the birds. He also had a thought of being like others and a great need for acceptance by others. From this projective test, we can say that the personality of Snoodle was being shaped by his experiences with others since all the changes he experienced were contributed by others. Snoodle’s behavior changes throughout the video depending on the people he came across. Before interacting with those who discourage him, he behaves very well towards others. When others starts to discourage him, his behavior changes and we can see from the video that he does one to interact with others as the video continues before he meets the mountain man. His behavior after meeting the mountain man is very different since from that point he is able to interact with others and tell them that they can be able to fly using their wings. In the video, we can see that Snoodle had developed some defense mechanisms against others whom he knew would tell him bad things. One of the defense mechanisms he develops in his behavior is repression. Throughout the video, before he meets the mountain man, he tries to forget his inability to fly. Another defense mechanism he develops in his behavior is projection, whereby he treats those who mistreat him well but he does not fail to complain about what they say to him. Another defense mechanism we can say is choosing to avoid other people in order to avoid the bad things they say about him. We can discover two types of intelligence in Snoodle. These are the social intelligence and the everyday intelligence. However, both these two changes significantly depending on the set of tasks that Snoodle set to undertake and the domain in which those tasks are undertaken. This intelligence is directly connected to mental processes and thus the Feud’s first model of mind can help us to understand them better. The two types of intelligence are somehow correlated in the way they change throughout the video but they do not interdependent. Snoodle has a high relative index of social intelligence during the beginning of the video which later declines due to the negative things he is told by others and later increases when he meets the mountain man. The other type of intelligence also changes in a similar way but this cannot make us to conclude that they are dependent of each other since they are changing different from one situation to the other. The Feud’s first model of mind divides mental processes into three categories of thoughts are conscious, preconscious and unconscious (John, Robins and Pervin 63). At the beginning, Snoodle had a high level of thoughts and some preconscious thoughts but had no unconscious thoughts. However, due to what he was told by others, at the middle of the video, he has only the unconscious thoughts. By the end of the video, when he encounters the mountain man, his unconscious thoughts are converted to conscious ones. The two kinds of intelligence that Snoodle has change similarly to the way his mental processes and thus they are related to each other. Snoodle’s development from the beginning of the video to the end relies mainly on what he is told by others and thus we can associate his development with the oral psychosexual stage of development. This is because his different aspects of life develop depending on what others say about him. He develops negatively in terms of his behavior, intelligence, and personality when people say bad things about him and develops positively when they say good things about him. All the three stages of development that are the prenatal development, upbringing, and adulthood are related. The prenatal development influence later development of a person in different ways. It is during the prenatal period that caregivers prepare to develop the child in its various aspects. It is during this period that the caregivers have the prospects of the sex of the child and thus designs the gender roles and the gender typing. It is also in this stage that the caregivers design their parenting style and it is where the cultural influence starts to have impact on the child. This continues during upbringing resulting to gender identity, intimacy, and moral development of the child. If all these aspects of development are put into consideration during all the stages of development then one can be safe in his sexual orientation. However, if any of the aspects of development is neglected in any of the stages then one cannot be safe in his sexual orientation. References Ashcraft, Donna. Personality Theories Workbook.
