Extract of sample "The Negative Vibes by the Environment of the Work"

 Our subject wanted to climb up to the corporate ladder before she reached the age of 30. She wanted to become the area manager of the retail stores in the region before she attain the age of 30. Given her employment background, she is currently the manager of a retail store. This for her is just the start of reaching her goals in life. Though she is already well compensated at her work, she is still not fulfilled with what she has now. She still strives harder each and every day and wants to prove to her boss and her subordinates that she can still do more than what she offers the company. The subject emphasized that it is not just the financial matter that pushes her to strive harder and to become successful, but it is more of the drive to achieve all her goals that she set when she was still young. She was not the smart girl in the family. Our subject was always compared to her brother who was an achiever in his early age. This feeling of being always compared and the hunger to gain her parents’ acknowledgement pushes her to do more. One of the major contributors or reasons why our subject has these goals in life is the fact that she was never appreciated by her parents the way she wanted them to. She has been longing for their compliments and approval that she was unique and smart. On the other hand, the speeches of her parents were always pointing to becoming like her brother. She was always in competition with her brother’s achievement since before. But she felt like she never won. Pervin’s Theory of Goal Directed Behavior Pervin’s theory of Goal Directed Behavior discussed that each of us has our target “end-points” or goals that guides each of our behaviour and activities to ensure that we successfully reach these end-points. According to Pervin, the most common goals are to acquire approval of others such as our parents and those that we value in our lives, have fun, and even to be able to exert influence or power over others. Our subject has her own end-points of being able to climb up to the corporate ladder and become a very successful boss of the company she’s working with. The reason of this goal is more of being able to get the approval and acknowledgement of her dear parents in the near future. The subject felt being inferior to her brother. Since she was young, she strives harder to be able to gain her parents compliments and approval. The theory of goal directed behaviour supposes that we are sometimes unaware of our goals. One of the major components of our goals came from our affection or emotions. Even though we do not really admit our goals in life, our emotions lead us through behave in the direction of getting these goals achieve. When the subject was asked why she really wanted to achieve more than what she already had today, she hesitantly admitted that it was more on getting the positive acceptance from her parents. She doesn’t want to admit this especially in front of her parents because she doesn’t want to get an impression that she always has been in competition with her brother to their affection. Other important concepts in Pervin’s goal directed behaviour theory are activation, maintenance and termination of goals. According to Pervin, the activation of our goal occurs through either external or internal sources or stimuli. Once we already activated our goals, we make sure that we are able to maintain this state. However, when we are able to satisfy ourselves with the achievement of our goals, we terminate our efforts. Our subject wanted to become a successful corporate boss in their company, she wanted to become one of the executives. But when she was asked what she will do after she reached all these goals, she didn’t know what to answer. She doesn’t know what to do after she reached her goals. If we apply Pervin’s theory, she will soon terminate her efforts. She will therefore stop working so hard once she becomes the area manager and either relaxes and reinforces herself with what she missed out in life such as travelling abroad. Bandura’s Self-Regulation Theory According to Bandura’s theory of Self-Regulation, we set goals and standards to ourselves which affects our behaviour. These standards and behaviours affect us and our goals. Bandura reiterated that if we see ourselves being able to achieve our goals, we maintain our behaviours and standards. Self-efficacy can motivate our behaviour on our commitment to achieving our goals and standards in life. If we know that we are able to start achieving our target, we become more persistent and aggressive to achieve more. Like our subject, she already has started to climb to the corporate ladder. At the age of 24, she became the manager of the branch she’s handling. Now that she started to taste the fruits of her labor, she wanted to exert more efforts to ensure that she gets her dreams achieved. She became more persistent to work harder because she knew she is efficient in her ways. The standards of how she lives today are perceived by the subject as a good start to her dreams. She will continue to regulate herself from other external forces that may affect her and the achievement of her dreams. She admitted that she never wanted to utilize her vacation leaves; instead she just wanted to work harder and stay at their office to study and learn more about the business. Since she started working, she was never gone at her work by more than a week. She ensures that she will not miss out anything in her work. She wanted to be always on top of everything. This theory of self-regulation explains why our subject live with restrictions. She never wanted any complications in life. She does not want any hindrances to her dreams. She swore that she will not let anyone or anything stop her from achieving these goals. She admits that she missed a lot of things and experiences in life such as having a love life, travelling in other places like any other women who are financially stable. According to our subject, her achievements so far compensates for whatever she missed out in her life. Private Speech and Inner speech Two of the major personality therapy approaches that may help us accomplish our goals in life are the private speech and inner speech. When we talk to ourselves aloud, this is called a “private speech”, on the other hand if we talk to ourselves silently; it is referred to as “inner speech.” Though before we see these approaches as signs of insanity by talking to oneself aloud or silently, recent researches suggest that these approaches have very important effects in our cognitive and regulatory functions. These are viewed by developmental psychologists as normal part of development of children. According to MacKay (1992), one important functions of this self-talk or inner speech is being able to help in processing the information and long term memory rehearsal. Another noted function of this approach is determined by Brown (1965) that this may help in rehearsing for future conversations and becoming better by learning from experiences. This approach also helps in increasing self-esteem as it can take away stress by feeding our minds of positive feelings. According to this approach, our subject has to feed herself with positive thoughts and feelings that will eventually reach her goals. This will help her take away the negativities in her mind such as doubts, stress, and the possibility that will not attain her goals. By self-talking, she can take away these negativities that may affect her behaviour and eagerness to do what she needs to accomplish her dreams. Thus she will not get tired of whatever she effort she is exerting to learn and know the business she is handling. According to our subject, there are instances that she got tired of what she is doing. There have been times that she wanted to quit as she thought she will never become what she dreamt of becoming. These negative vibes are contributed by the environment of her work, the unacknowledged efforts and the consequences of her physical and emotional efforts. But according to module 5, she can get rid of these thoughts by either talking to herself aloud or silently. She has to feed herself with positive thoughts such as she is already on her way to climbing the corporate ladder, she’s an acknowledge master of her job by her subordinates, and she has already exerted too much effort to quit.
