Event Valence on Long-Term Memory - Essay Example

This journal aims at investigating how event valence has an effect on the precision and intensity of long term memory of the two major events by Red Sox and Yankee. The study incorporated 1,216 participants from Red Sox fans (78%) 281 Yankee fans 14%, and 129 8% of the neutral fans who were treated as control participants. In order to get the results, the methodology of conducting research includes the use of questionnaires to assess the memory of the participants on the two games. From the calculation of the results, the study indicated that, the participants were indicated to recall the number of games their teams won as compared to the games that their team lost. This is an interpretation of the fact that, the environment created a situation whereby the memory allowed fading of events that are negative, in this case, the lost games.

It is, therefore, justified to argue that, the memories of positive events are likely to be fading as compared to the memories of negative events that reported being rehearsed as vivid and accurate. An expectation rises when memories of bad events are made to fade out of the fans memories. In this study rehearsal increased accuracy in memory for publicity. Rehearsal can lead to low memory, in that it will lower fans interests in recalling. A strong memory that is subjective for positive events that are influenced by rehearsing might reduce willingness to the presumption about minor past events, in turn, cause lower accuracy of events provided.

It is presented in the conclusion that previous studies indicated that people remembered negative events, more than positive events, but the individuals were found to remember past events because of constant reminders of negative events.
