My Ultimate Career Decision to Become a Surgeon. My interest to pursue medical surgery started rather incidentally. It was just another day in Anatomy and Physiology class when Mr. Snider announced the commencement of the semester's laboratory assignment. He gave the class brief instructions on what the assignment entails. As soon as he finished giving the instructions, we crowded around Morgue II and I; that houses the classroom refrigerators. Each pair of students was assigned a lab. cat for the semester. My partner, Angel, and I were selected to keep "the grand prize": a pregnant cat named Stinky. For the first few weeks, Angel and I arduously worked on skinning our cat. After every lab day session, we would wrap the skinned fur around Stinky and store her in Morgue I. However, one day, Morgue I was full, and we were forced to store Stinky in Morgue II for the night. The next day, Angel and I quickly retrieved Stinky from Morgue II and placed her on our lab station. As I began to remove the fur, I noticed that there was something wrong with Stinky. She had a more pungent smell than usual. Then Angel pointed out snowflakes that were blossoming on Stinky's jet-black fur "Stinky, our pregnant cat, is molding" I exclaimed. We were so devastated, we needed Stinky throughout the semester and she was already decomposing. "What are we going to do about the molding cat How are we going to fix this problem" These were the pressing questions that we asked ourselves. We had to think of a way of reducing the rate of decomposition if not stop it. For the rest of the semester, Angel and I performed numerous surgeries in order to stop the growing mold from the decomposing Stinky. We amputated Stinky's legs, which were badly affected by the mold, endure the disgusting odour Stinky was producing and improvised a lot of laboratory procedures in order to overcome difficulties presented by the decomposing Stinky. Despite our unfavorable circumstances, Angel and I passed all of our lab tests with outstanding marks. Despite my high school offering very few advanced courses, I grasped every challenging advanced classes offered, including the Running Start Program. Little did I know that, one of these challenging classes would give me a "stinky surprise". Originally, I registered for Anatomy and Physiology class in order to find out if the medical field could be my right future career. After unusual experience with my lab. cat, I was no longer in doubt that wanted to become a surgeon. Despite the challenges presented by the decomposing lab. cat, I was far much mesmerized by the inner anatomical structures of the lab. cat and how they could be related to human anatomy. Looking back on my battle with Stinky, I realized I had developed a career interest in medicine specifically medical surgery. Now that I had dealt with Stinky, I desire more challenges especially a career that involves human anatomy and physiology. I want to become part of a human profession whose career involve saving human life. A surgeon saves lives of people; he/she cures diseases that ordinary medical procedures had failed. By use of a surgeon's kit, a surgeon meticulously carry out surgeries that have given many people a new lease of life and great joy to families and communities. Standing up to the Challenge of ESL Class "Welcome to room 201: English as a Second Language (ESL) Class" would catch anyone's glimpse as he/she enters room 201. Room 201 was still, as usual, through the opened window, I could see the infamous Washington rain; my only time keeper, pouring down. My teacher, a plump lady with wild orange hair, was munching cheetos while flipping through her "People Magazine". I tried to ignore other students' lure stare and gaping mouths as I attempted to pass the time fruitlessly. When my family relocated to USA, we settled in a small city. I was enrolled in an elementary school called Endeavor Elementary. This is when I found myself as the only Korean immigrant in a school where majority of student population were white. Since, Endeavor Elementary did not have many non-English speaking students; the ESL program in Fife was very poor. As a result, ESL program was not helping me much in improving my English. I was simply rewriting the alphabets and was no closer to achieving proficiency in English, as I would have back in South Korea. Other ESL students seemed not to care, but I felt a great urgency to learn English. I was only nine years old at the time, but every night my parent's had numerous mails reserved for me to translate using my limited English and Korean-English dictionary. There were times when I wished I do not have this responsibility. I always wished that my parents would speak English like other parents and attend teacher's conferences on their own without taking me along with them. I realized that, Language barrier was hindering my family from leading a normal life as other American families do. I had sworn to myself that I must learn English as soon as possible. Moreover, for me to achieve my goals, I knew ESL was not a place to be Back in school, I decided to stay with Mr. Brown, my 4th grade teacher, for English class. Mr. Brown willingly took me in and taught me additional English lessons. I was more than willing to learn English and each day I would raise my hand up to answer a question or ask one. Although my questions and answers involved more of hand motions and a lot of pointing than verbal communication, Mr. Brown patiently helped me out. I knew my persistent questions annoyed other students who also needed help, but I was determined to learn no matter what. My personal zeal to learn English extinguished my embarrassment and blinded me from others' apparent displeasure. After two years at Endeavor Elementary, it was time for me to register for my 6th grade classes. I wanted to take all the challenging courses, including "Honors English". With Mr. Brown and my parents' support, I turned in the necessary materials and waited. On the last day of school, my counselor called out the names of those who were accepted. "Jordan Landholm, Kaitlin Larsonmy name " Before I even called my parents, I rushed over to Mr. Brown. I wanted to thank him for all his patience, hard work and faith. But somehow, all the words I struggled to embed into my vocabulary seemed inadequate. Without a single word, I gave Mr. Brown a hug: a universal language that required no explanations. The experience of ESL class in Endeavor Elementary, arouse inside me the confidence to face the challenging tasks positively. People like Mr. Brown and My parents become my inspiration. I am now convinced than ever that "if you really desire something so passionately, the whole world will conspire with you to have it".
