When identifying a research methodology, it is essential to evaluate and determine the nature of the variables of the research so that the research methodology selected is one that allows for the uninterrupted and appropriate execution of the research. In cases where the research approach adopted is one that is not compatible with nature, the research suffers significantly and adverse implications are relayed to the findings of the research. The deterioration of the findings of the research contributes to the derivation of inaccurate conclusions and renders the recommendation useless.

Fundamentally there are two approaches that are used in research. A first approach is a positivistic approach and the second approach to the interpretive approach.1.4.1 The Positivistic approachThe positivistic approach is one that seeks to assist in the execution of research that incorporates a large number of positivistic facts and figures. Generally, a positivistic approach is based on the accumulation of facts and figures and the subjection of those facts and figures to analysis that is generally based on statistical examination or cross-comparison for the purpose of developing the understanding of patterns and trends in the data.

The Positivistic approach is commonly used in scenarios where the subject of research is based on variables that can be expressed in terms of numerical figures. The expression of variables through numerical figures facilitates the precise and often mathematical assessment of the variables and serves to clear concepts in terms of the relations that exist between the variables.
