US Government and Lobbying - Essay Example

The primary thing that needs to be understood about the US government is that the system of congressional representation in it is determined on the basis of geographical boundaries. Hence, it is imperative for the varied functional, political, economic and regional interest groups within the nation to be heard by various congressmen hailing from varied geographical locations (Cammisa 3). The primary goal of the lobbyists interacting with congressmen is to speak on behalf of the functional, political, regional and geographical interest groups they are affiliated to, to the congressmen, and to convey their concerns, aspirations, fears, and hopes.

In that context, lobbying plays an important role in the US government as it is the congressmen who are primarily responsible for making laws pertaining to varied issues (MacFarland 2). For instance if the congress is to pass some law regarding banning the usage of tobacco products, than it is the lobbyists associated with the varied stakeholders in the tobacco industry like farmers, manufacturers, sellers, consumers, healthcare professionals, etc, who will try to influence the stance taken by congressmen regarding this law, by lobbying for these stakeholders.

There is no denying the fact that lobbying plays an important role in the legislative process in the nation.
