The Labor Market Discrimination Discuss at least five economic factors of how society and government policies are helping to reduce Labor Market Discrimination in United States and the Global Economy The economic factors and government policies that impact the reduction of Labor Market Discrimination in United States and the Global Economy include, the initiative taken by the government to reduce the discrimination in the process of job choice. The law that is passed to ensure that no company discriminates among the prospective employees based on the culture, caste, race or gender helps in reduction of labor market discrimination. Secondly, the growing acceptance of a level of pay for the job instead of based on the gender of the individual helps in reduction of the imbalance in the pay given for the same amount of work done by two individuals. Also, the reduction of the discrimination from the beginning like in schools and removal of complete disparity at this stage helps in developing more diverse society and a more effective labor market as well. The focus on skills rather than the creed and culture is also a major factor impacting the reduction of the Labor Market Discrimination. Other factors that also impact the Labor Market Discrimination include the opening up of newer jobs for people and the acceptance of genders, castes and creed helps in improving the condition of the Labor Market Discrimination. Using all the movies presented in class, explain how they relate to racism and gender discrimination The three movies that have been discussed in this class include Freedom Writers, Rossie the Riveter and Crash. The three movies although are of different genres and come from completely different views and insights, have a main theme of gender and race discrimination. For instance the movie Crash is based on a complete racial discrimination where the police officer is against African Americans and hence takes the step of even sexually abusing here in a routine stop. All actions that the police officer takes are based on complete racial discrimination and have a major impact on the story as a whole. In terms of Rossie the Riveter, it is clear that the discrimination is mostly based on the women and how women are treated like they cannot work. In the normal world there are a number of jobs that are believed to be a ‘man’s job’ and women are considered to be unworthy of doing the job. This story has brought out how women overcome all the conventional beliefs and show the world that they can work together and can work as well or in fact better than men in a number of occasions as well. Considering the Freedom Writer the story brings out how a cultural mixed class work together and how a women is able to bring an unruly class to a more organized and well behaved class. The lady teacher helps in making all the people from different cultural backgrounds work together and be united. Hence this movie brings out the race as well as gender discrimination. It is widely believed that government investment in women’s education result in societal as well as private benefits. Discuss each. Such investments are particularly important in developing countries. Why? Women have been faced with a number of issues over the years especially in the developing countries. Till date a number of developing countries have discriminated against women to a great extent. In countries like India there are still a majority of the women who are not given the basic education as well. With the government investing in the women education across the world, it helps in opening up newer opportunities for women. Also the women are now able to at least learn the basic rights that they have and this helps in supporting them in speaking up for their rights and position in society. Women are now able to use education to help improve their personal position in the country and the society as well. It also helps them stand up against the domestic violence that they might be going through. In terms of the society, it is very helpful that the women are given education as it helps them work together to develop their society. Also it permits women to learn more about the various options that they have in terms of work as well as even in terms of simple population control, with the education increasing among the women, there is now a more focus on ensuring family planning which helps the society as well. Apart from religion, what other factors affect women’s experiences and opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa? Countries in the Middle East and North Africa have a number of restrictions on women and have kept women back to only be a part of the family and take care of children. Apart from the religious beliefs there is also undue advantage that is given to the men in society. For instance, women are banned from driving in the country. Women also go through a number of other issues like domestic violence and are tied down inside the house with a need to take permission for every single step they take. For instance, a woman is not allowed to travel without an acceptance letter from their guardian. The restrictions are many and women are not treated in a cordial manner. Although the women are equally as talented as the men and have the skills to make it in the professional world, there is a sense of difference that is always present. The inequality and discrimination that is present in the country leads the women to be deprived of their rights and leads the women to be left out and deprived of opportunities. Also, with the number of restrictions that are imposed on the women, the women are not able to even dream of being a part of the professional world. These factors lead to the opportunities and experiences of the women to be restricted to a great extent. What are the pros and cons of non standard employment for workers? Non standard employment simply refer to people who work either part time, temporary, on – call, contract or even self employed. There are a number of benefits and drawbacks of this form of employment for both the employers as well as the employees. The major pros and cons for the employees here are as discussed below. The benefits of this form of employment are that the work is always based on the skill levels and occupational experience of the employee and there is a high degree of structure involved in the employments. The level of flexibility and the type of work is directly related to the kind of work that the employees prefer doing and provides the employee with a sense of satisfaction for the work. Employees can balance their personal and professional life due to the flexible timing and to some extent this form of working style is referred to as a ‘family – friendly’ practice. The drawbacks of this form of employment are that it there is no fixed source of income and there is no definite source from where the worker can expect the next pay check from. This uncertainty can lead to confusions and chaos within the house where the there is not clear source of income. Also, if an individual is unwell for some period, then they would not be paid and can cause the income to varying for the individual. Also, at time where the demand for their skills is low there is no other source of income for the individual and this can cause a major issue. Read More
