Country Case Report – Pakistan Pakistan came into being in the year 1947. It faced a lot of economic trouble after its independence and to this day the effect of economic problems does not seem to end. However it is the sudden economic upheaval that Pakistan faces which has one thing or the other on its credit. However in totality, it has failed to live up to its expectations nonetheless. When it comes to international economy regarding trade, finance and production sectors, one finds that Pakistan due to its strategic location remains at the limelight for investors and trade parties more often than not. Also India is the direct neighbor of Pakistan and this makes matters more interesting and viable for investing within the industries of Pakistan on a longer basis. However the affect that terrorism has had in the post-9/11 era has really thwarted the economic upsurge of Pakistan and thus trade investors and finance stakeholders are always skeptical for one reason or the other. The Pakistani Rupee has been devalued many times but since the early 2000s, it has been consistently stable when one compares the same with the United States Dollar. Democracy returned to Pakistan in the year 2002 and its economic graph started to rise ever since. Much stability is present within the economic actors of the state and there seems to be less tension than was present a decade back. Investors are given the confidence to invest within Pakistan in a free and more open manner and there are assured time and again as per their respective investments. Recently international observers remarked Pakistan’s Karachi Stock Exchange as the most viable for investors within 2007 – which speaks highly of the confidence that the investors, brokers and stakeholders have had in the past and even in the present times. This speaks volumes of the right and adequate steps taken by the government of the time as they understood that Pakistan would only be able to make it big within the international economic domains if there is more room for the trade investors, financial concerns and production industries. When it comes to Pakistan’s global participation, one finds that it has played an active role at nearly all the fronts within the international domains. In fact Pakistan is a key ally in the War against Terror and has supported United States, United Kingdom and the allied forces on a consistent basis. Pakistan has been a member of United Nations ever since it achieved independence. Till recently, it was a member of the Commonwealth but since Pakistan imposed emergency in the state on 3 November 2007, the Commonwealth canceled its membership with the organization. Also Pakistan is an active member of some of the world’s biggest and most powerful organizations. Since Pakistan is situated within the South Asian sub-continent, it is also a member of SAARC which is a body that looks after the interests of the South Asian neighbor nations. Pakistan is thus a very involved member within all such bodies and usually it is the first one to raise its voice against corruption, terrorism, nepotism and all the sinful acts that the developed world is committing every now and then. Since Pakistan is an industrializing nation, it is doing everything within its hold to make its voice heard in a better and more effective manner. It has been more than 6 decades that Pakistan became an independent nation but the role it has had within the global community is not much to state the least. It has yet to become a force to reckon with and one can keep his fingers crossed to imagine that the strength and talent which Pakistan brings to the table on any given day is more than any other country possible. The need of the hour is to educate the masses within Pakistan so that they could change the face of the world. Its global role needs to be analyzed in a manner that it could provide more benefits than it is at the present. Only then one can envisage better efforts by the elm of affairs within Pakistan – efforts that could benefit all and sundry within the global domains. The major issues that Pakistan faces at the present is terrorism – both within its nation as well as the external factors or the countries like Afghanistan and India which carry out terrorist activities within the lengths and breadths of Pakistan and thus destabilize the process of economic maturity and political constancy. When it comes to dealing with the major issues that confront Pakistan at the hands of the developed nations, the expectations that the latter have with Pakistan are immense since the allied forces like United States and United Kingdom are asking Pakistan to ‘do more’ than it is in the name of rooting out the evil of terrorism from not only the realms of Pakistan but also in the global domains. Speaking of the major issue that Pakistan has with the developing countries, one must understand that Pakistan itself is a developing country and hence it is undertaking all measures to help and facilitate the underdeveloped brother nations. Thus the major issues for Pakistan with the industrializing nations are not that many since it has itself plunged into problems of its own as one can realize Pakistan being on the rear end of the political scenario that has engulfed the whole South Asian war-trodden region and more so after the 9/11 attacks of 2001. Pakistan is doing its utmost to live up to its promise of being a ‘fair’ state when it comes to sweeping out terrorism but this is a sad fact that it has become a victim of its own medicine. The co-operation that Pakistan has with the West has not helped its cause one bit and it would not be wrong to suggest that the Western forces need to have equality and a sense of purpose when they deal with Pakistan. Therefore it is valid to suggest that there is not a single confrontation of sheer magnitude that Pakistan faces at present, in fact there are a number of the very same. What is significant now is to realize that the major issues have destabilized Pakistan for a long time now and the rulers and government officials within Pakistan must get their act together and devise a way to bring back stability to the shores of the nation – be it in the form of economy, politics or culture so to speak.
