Task: Natural Science Short Answers Some home-run sluggers prefer heavy bats, claiming that the extra weight in the collision results in a longer hit. Other players choose a light or moderate weight bat with a similar claim (occasionally, when a wood bat is used, a player will illegally install a cork to lessen the weight). Who is correct in this argument about weight? Explain. The sluggers who prefer heavier bats are correct. Lighter bats are easier and faster to swing however, they have less inertia.

A ball from a corked bat comes out with less velocity meaning a shorter hit. A heavier bat will hit the ball harder than a lighter corked bat and a ball hit by a heavier bat will go farther. So, corking in this case will not result in longer hits, but it may allow a batter to have more solid hits on the ball.2. Suppose in a restaurant your coffee is served about 5 or 10 minutes before you are ready for it. In order that it be as hot as possible when you drink it, should you pour in the room-temperature cream right away or when you are ready to drink the coffee?

Explain You should pour the room temperature cream right away. Black coffee is a better radiation and will cool faster. When you add the room temperature cream, you lighten the coffee minimizing the chances of losing heat. Using Boltzmann’s law that says hotter surfaces radiate heat faster on adding the cream you also reduce the rate at which it will lose heat. Finally, when you add cream the coffee becomes more viscous resulting in a slower heat loss3.
