No More Privacy Policies PART I: SCIENTIFIC METHOD Science plays a central role in the life of any human. One of the roles is explaining human behavior using different methods. Scientists have developed explanations to human behavior on a regular basis to aid in people understanding different patterns of behavior. This has resulted in the development of an objective way of explaining human behavior most commonly referred to as the scientific method. The scientific method is a systematic way of studying human behavior and involves five distinct steps (Reichenbach, 2006). There is need to revisit the topic on scientific methods in order to grasp a greater understanding of the topic and offer a better analysis of a case scenario. According to William Buckman, the scientific method includes five steps: a) forming a question b) designing a hypothesis from the questions c) conducting an experiment based on the hypothesis d) analysis of the experiment stating the different outcomes and, e) drawing a conclusion based on the different outcomes. The five steps are going to be used in different case scenarios in coming up with a resolution. First scenario In the first case, I arrive in the house at midnight. I walk up to the front door, unlock it and reach to turn on the light switch located inside the front door. However, the lights do not come and I don’t understand the reason for the condition. From all the events, I observed that the lights could not go on. The above scenario results in an interest to know why the lights could not go on. Before leaving the house the lights were functioning well but on returning there was a different scenario where the lights were not coming up. There was not even a ray of light coming form the light bulb. Naturally, one is expected to find things as they were but this was different since the bulb that was left working was no longer working. That was the observation. The observation is then succeeded by a hypothesis which involves a series of assumptions on what might the problem that may be causing the light not to function properly. According to Mak and Mak (2009), a hypothesis includes a guess about the working or occurrence of something. The authors further note that the hypothesis should be closely linked to the problem in order to assist in getting a satisfying solution to the problem. In such a case, the hypotheses include the bulb being loosely connected, the bulb being blown out, disconnection of electricity from the meter box or lack of electricity supply as a result of a blackout. The experiment involved checking the bulb connection, replacing the bulb with a new one, checking the meter box if it was indicating the supply of electric power and confirming from neighboring residences if there was the supply of electricity in the area. I recorded results including that that the bulb was indeed loosely connected, a replaced bulb could light, there was connection of electricity from the meter box and the whole neighborhood had the supply of electricity. I narrowed down to two observations including the bulb was loosely connected and the replaced bulb was light. The conclusion of the experiment is that the cause of the lighting problem was as a result of the bulb being loosely connected because when the bulb was well connected there was light in the house. Second scenario The second scenario involves the development of a personal case as opposed to answering an established case like the above case. In the second case, I arrived at home and was eager to watch a movie. Io went to the living room with a pack of movie discs. However, I observed that the DVD was not working. It did not even blink a flicker of light when I switched the ‘on’ button. Why was my DVD not working yet it was used just four hours ago? That was the question that I was left to ponder on. I formulated hypotheses including the battery in the remote control could be dead, lack of power, or poor connection of the DVD cables. I conducted an experiment on the basis of the three hypotheses in a respective order (Mak & Mak, 2009). The experiments included checking out the battery by replacing it with a new battery, checking the power socket for the supply of electricity, and finally checking the connection of wire cables form the DVD. I recorded results form the three experiments and they included: replacing the battery from the remote resulted in the DVD functioning properly; there was power supply through the power socket and; the DVD was well connected to the socket. Based from the above results, the convincing solution to the problem is replacing the battery from the remote control. The problem identified relates to the remote control having a dead battery that rendered it useless. From the two case analyses, it is important to note that the scientific method is an appropriate method of solving problems in a systematic manner. This is in support of Carey (2011) who noted that the scientific method reduces the uncertainty of getting solutions to any given problems. PART II: WHY I CANNOT LIVE WITH/WITHOUT SCIENCE I wake up at 4 am in the morning and prepare myself for school. One of the major preparations includes going through my notes to get a grasp of what the teacher was teaching in class. I have a studying table in my college room from where I undertake my studies. The table is fixed with a light bulb that I use in during my studies. After having a one hour study, I go to the shower and take a warm shower at around five in the morning. I always do all my cleaning in the washing room including cleaning my teeth after which I prepare breakfast using a water heater. In most cases, I prefer taking tea with a slice of bread before I embark on another one hour skimming of my notes. I leave for class at around seven thirty and the lessons begin at eight. We have a large population of students in our science class. This requires that the teacher uses microphones to address the students. Most of our lessons involve lectures with little note making since the course instructor avails the noted through e-learning (Lovler, Miller & McIntire, 2010). During lessons, the teacher uses a projector in delivering lectures. The projector has been useful especially when showing videos during presentations. During breaks, I engage friends in updating our news information. We get to browse the internet for the latest news especially football news. We also involve ourselves in connecting friends using social sites. Before the end of break, we visit the notice board to find out if there is an announcement that required our attention. We get back to class and continue with the normal learning process up until lunch break. During lunch break, I visit the cafeteria for lunch. There is a variety of food and services are delivered at a fast rate due to the use of modern methods of serving customers. I spend most of my time in the evening in the field exercising and playing football. I spend almost two hours and at around six I visit friends to watch movies and catch up the latest news on the TV. We spend about two hours watching movies and news after which I take supper in the cafeteria or sometimes cook using an electric cooker in my room. After supper, I take a seven hour sleep to have enough rest. Generally, science has impacted me positively in my daily routine. I am able to access adequate education through the use of e-learning despite the large number of students. I am also able to access faster services at the cafeteria because there is the use of electricity that speeds up preparation of meals. In the evening I am able to take some exercises and take enough rest. This has enabled me to keep my body fit and maintain my brain cells to be active. Science recommends that enough sleep and daily exercise keeps the body active. Science has improved my life in many ways including improved reading, improved access to services, accessing information form any place within the vicinity of network communication. Science has also improved my social interactions through the invention of social sites and the mobile phone. The use of electricity enables me to read at any time during the night. Electricity also enables the cafeteria prepare meals faster and the use of television has ensured the access of information through the TV and also watching of movies. I don’t have to watch a movie from the theatres but form my room. Despite the improved living standard, science has had a negative impact to my life including increased exposure to diseases associated with increased chemicals in foods, exposure to too much light from the TV resulting in eye complications (Lemkell, 2008). I don’t believe that I would survive without science has played a major role in improving my life in general. This includes my health condition, social life and economic life. Science led to the discovery of medicine for treatment and protecting humans against any disease infection. Whenever I am sick, I get medicine that restores my health condition. Science has enabled the discovery of new medicines to replace the irrelevant medicine. Socially, I am able to connect with people from different places in the world with the introduction of cell phones and other devices that facilitate easy communication. Economically, I am able to access services of high quality at minimum time period and costs (Gimbel, 2011). This course has taught me the need to appreciate science because science is integral in the survival of humans. Scientific research has played an important role in ensuring that problems are solved for instance using the scientific method. Science also has played a major part in improving the quality of life as discussed above. There is an overall need in appreciating the role of science in human life because science touches almost all spheres of human life including education, health, social and health (Flick & Lederman, 2005).
