How does learning affect your life now? Number] [28/11 Philosophy is about reflections and how we examine life and eventually identify, thus, it probes views; and unravels provoking thoughts out of those examinations. It is indeed a very delicate thought process that a person involves himself in, the end result enables humans to learn to reflect and evaluate. In reference to this, being critical and observing closely aids in living a life that is full of meaning and accounts for reasonableness. This accountability may not enhance the adequate decision making skills which a person requires to live perfect life, but what this accountability does, is to offer us with solutions or alternatives, which make life easy and peaceful with a high element of acceptance and broader vision to see different aspects to life. The issues can be petty, but they bring about a whole enormous chain of changes ahead. What I truly believe and have learned throughout the course is that it is important to keep a check on oneself and the gratifications around. Humans are extremely unpredictable species, they want pleasure and fun, but it bores them eventually; so life offers different phases and challenges, in which miseries enable one to learn to be grateful of what one already has. Of course, perfection is something that doesn’t exist, but somewhere on the way, it is a fair possibility that a person masters the art of excellence, Vince Lombardi believed. When I first started my self-examination I was convinced, prior to the reflection, that I am a person who knows everything about himself. However, it turned out to be that I’m completely flawed, or was, at that point in time. Of course, I haven’t really understood myself completely and I’m still in the process of doing so, but I do appreciate whatever I have learned throughout the entire experience. I have to mention, that it is indeed a very fascinating phase that I am in currently, by realizing my own potentials, weaknesses and my reflection upon them (Plato, 3). Socrates mentions about wisdom that it is perhaps not very wise to think of oneself as a wise person, for wisdom starts residing within a person when he actually realizes that he apparently does not know as much as he think he does (White, 34). This view is very generic these days; everyone believes that others are not wise. The truth is the person holds such opinion about others merely believes in others. Linking another thought from the same philosopher is about knowledge. A person cannot possibly know everything, but this he knows for sure and that what his span of knowledge. To relate to the Philosopher’s heedful analysis of knowledge and wisdom, I have my own personal experience to share. A friend once said to me, about how preposterously I discuss the random mundane matters, and was only being judgmental. Now I realize by deeply analyzing my actions and perspective regarding others, that one tends to act in such manner every once in a while. Yes, but my speaking ‘Preposterously’ of the mundane has everything to do with how I wanted myself to appear. Though, I knew that trivial matters in chat often change one’s image in others perspective and I held the same opinion about others, but unconsciously I acted in the same manner. I adapted the impulsive style and became someone I never was, or acted in a manner that I despised myself. Although, I did not like my friend being judgemental about me, but eventually I realized that the dear friend has showed be a personality trait of mine, which I never knew before. Another thought that I reflected upon throughout this whole process is that even though friend of mine might be a different person, and he may not have reflected upon it as yet. He enabled me to reflect upon something which never came across to me and that I gathered while I was trying to figure out myself. I am not implying, but just imagining the endless possibilities of personalities in this world, who are doing the same and not realizing. This is another chapter of life that I have skimmed through or have, most of the times, ignored by all. I have always been speculative of education and teachers as to what they really want from us? Perfection, it’s unfeasible. Why are they being so inflexible to us? Yes, that is indeed true, that I considered those aspects as annoying matters of my life, which I might as well laugh at later, for I might surpass them. When I started thinking about the most important decision of choosing a career, I realized that research is one of the primary sources that would help me decide. College education seemed exceptionally important for one to earn a thriving career. In argument to whether education really works that miraculously or not, I came across another profound thought by a very influential Greek philosopher: Aristotle. He once said about the auspiciousness of teachers as against parents and the significance of the role they play in a person’s life. Although parents give life to a child, but a teacher who edifies a person is actually teaching him the art of living in a superior way! When I read and interpreted its meaning, I became grateful and realized if I haven’t got the opportunity to be educated, what would I have been? The possibilities were very disturbing and endless. I sincerely realized how much effort is put by the educators to enable us to specialize and understand the life better. And eventually, we do turn out to attain the best in life and never once think about who contributed time and effort to enable us to live a life that we are living successfully today. I reckon; I have been a lost soul figuring out life very coarsely. As I see it now, I am exposed to a completely new and phenomenal approach towards those feeding us with education on the whole. Plato has defined the philosophy of lie; it is something we fancy to believe to be true, although it is not. It is nothing, but an honest lie to oneself (“Platos Lie in The Soul”). I discovered when I lied about my personal matters to anyone in general, I did not want to believe or accept the fact in life. Thus, I acted as an ostrich how does not want to believe in reality and ducks his face to avoid the truth. I analysed who is suffering from such lies? Who is affected most from them? Who has to remember them every time they surface? Who has to act in accord with them? Who has to put justification in harmony with them? Who has to pretend according to them? Who am I fooling in this whole process no one, but myself. I often believed that my parents are quite a unique couple that I have seen. They quarrelled a lot, the arguments seem to continue to eternity once initiated and they often disagreed on trivial matters. I believed that I have lived a lie, but now I realized, love doesn’t necessary mean that one agrees with the other at all times or make compromises. Love means to accept differences and adapt the philosophy of change accordingly. It was indeed a true lie in believing that my friend’s parents usually do not argue, or believing in my friend’s lies and despising my family. Insecurities enable us to lie about our flaws which we want to hide. This happens more often then it happened before. I strongly believe that Delphic Oracle, when said to know oneself before jumping to conclusions is a very noticeable message to all of us (“Know Thyself”). I realized the significance of it overall while I was evaluating my findings in different situations, which I have been through. It is, however, very unfortunate that we fail to understand our-self. While I working on the self-assessment, I kept this view as a constant reminder, to help me see what I could not earlier. It helped a great deal and I have unmasked some very obscure sides of my personality. The philosophy, the reflections, has enabled me well to know myself in a different way. I have learned that philosophy is not only a subject, but also a guideline for life, which provides mankind with the opportunity to look within them. It is a great source for assessing one’s personality, finding flaws, the reasons for those flaws and gaining confidence through strengths (White,79). Word count: 1417 words.
