Kants Arguments in Practice - Essay Example

In scenario A, the lives of the millions of American people are at stake and useful information is held by a terrorist. Kant’s arguments are based on aspects such as will: he argues that goodwill is done for the sake of duty. He goes further to define a morally right action and according to this scenario; the maxim should become a universal law and the terrorist should, therefore, be subjected to torture to the moral good of the majority Americans at stake. According to Mill’s Utilitarian theory, good is determined by its consequences and if the consequences are pleasurable then the act is good.

Therefore, this approach would mean that the act of torture is undertaken for the happiness of the millions.  In scenario B and from Kant’s point of view it would not be ethical to frame the old man for the crimes he did not commit. It would be quite hard for the will of a maxim and its subjective principle becoming universal law to be proved. On Mill’s perspective based on utilitarian theory, it would be the only thing to do given the vast crisis that is currently witnesses in the multiracial community.

Convicting the old man for the crimes would have much positive impact on the socio-economic existence of the inhabitants here.
