My Life and Plans - Short-Term and Long-Term Goals Question 1: Where have I been? My life has been full of pleasure and different kinds of experiences. Those experiences have played a great role in shaping my personality. I have been brought up with extreme love and care. My parents always took care of each and every wish of me. They never let me feel down in front of any other person. The provided me with all necessities of life. I have learned many things during the past 24 years of my life. I have learned a lot dealing with different behaviours, attitudes, and people. But I would not say that my learning period has ended because in my view, a person keeps on learning till his last day in the world. Different types of experiences and behaviours hold significant importance in the life of any person and I am not an exception. My life has also been greatly influenced by the different kinds of attitudes and behaviours of people around me. My parents loved me a lot and it was their love which made me pass every challenge in my past life. I would say that my personality is greatly influenced by the behaviours and attitudes of my friends, family members, and relatives. This portfolio, which I am going to write, will reveal my whole personality, achievements, desires, personal strengths and weaknesses, interests, and major ambitions of my life. If I look at my past life, I would say that my life is a bundle of positive and negative experiences for me. Positive experiences made me move forward and tackle any kind of challenge whereas negative experiences made me feel dejected and sad at times. But I never took those negative experiences as something stressful for me, rather I found out the positive outcomes even from negative experiences of my life. Those positive outcomes helped me move forward in my life instead of looking backward and hating my past. I have never written my lifeline on a paper, so this is the first time I am trying to do so. I would love to write each and everything about me not only to reveal myself but also to make my memories and past life preserved forever. There were many sad events in my life which include death of my uncle, my friend’s accident in which he lost his leg, and low grades in my educational career. My uncle died a few years back and his death put a very huge impact on my life. He was a very loving person to me. He was just like my father. He took care of me in every part of my life. Whenever I needed someone to hold me, my uncle came forward and helped me out. He was not only my uncle but also one of my closest friends. I can never forget the day when I was supposed to go with my class on a school trip. The bus had to move from school at 8:30 am sharp. Unfortunately, I got late and the bus left the school for the trip without me. I felt very upset because all of my friends were in the bus and it was only me who couldn’t reach the school in time. At that moment, I called my uncle and started crying like a small kid. I told him everything and planned to go back to my house. Just when I was leaving the school, I saw my uncle coming towards the school in his car. I was really surprised watching all this. My uncle came to me and asked me to sit in his car. He asked me for where the trip was planned. After I told him about the place and time, he asked me to get ready to go there even before the bus reaches there. I did not believe it but it became reality when he got me to that place well before my class fellows reached there on school bus. I became very happy and my love and affection for my uncle increased as well. But as he has passed away now, I feel something missing in my life. I also miss one of my closest friends, Mark James. He was my class fellow in grade 6. He lost his leg in an accident. The accident made him disable for the rest of his life and he left the school too. As I was a very close friend of him, his worse condition also put a distressing impact on me. Apart from my uncle and my friend, one more thing which made me distressed in my past life was my educational performance. My educational performance was never up to the mark as I used to be an average student not only in the middle but also in the high school. The main reason behind my poor educational performance was my less interest in education. I never took my education serious and never prepared my lessons well. I did not want to go to school for studies and always waited for the holidays. My teachers were also not very happy with my performance and they used to tell about that to my parents at times. I wanted to get good grades but my interest in activities other than studies kept me down in my studies. Talking about my past, I would also like to reveal some of the proudest moments of my life, which not only gave me confidence but also made me work hard to achieve my desired goals and ambitions. A couple of those moments include winning the karate championship at the training academy where I used to go for karate training and the day my father opened his own company. I have been a lover of karate game since my childhood. I used to watch movies of some of the famous martial arts performers, which include Bruce Lee and Jackie Chen. I won first prize in the karate championship that was held in the academy where I used to get training. It was a very happy moment of my life as I achieved something that I loved to. My second peak moment was when my father decided to open his own company. He is a businessperson by profession. As long as I remember, my father always worked hard for the better future of all of us. I started to take interest in my education after seeing my father’s success in business. It was his success along with my interest, which motivated me to get high standard education from some prestigious university. Therefore, I decided to continue my education in the field of business from the United Kingdom. My father had been a source of encouragement and appreciation in my past. Apart from these two moments, another good moment of my life was when I got admission in one of the top universities of the United Kingdom. I was not a good student in my past because of which it was looking very difficult for me to get admission in a top university. But by the grace of God, I got what I wanted and it proved to be one of the proudest moments of my life. Summing it up, I would say that my past life was full of different types of experiences. Some experiences made me feel bad whereas some experiences made me feel relaxed and cherished. However, I would say that all those experiences played a significant role in shaping my present life and they helped me learn a lot from life. Those experiences made me mentally strong and confident. Question 2: Where am I now? In this section, I am going to talk about my personality, my current standings, and my skills and abilities. This section will also explore those different types of skills and professional qualifications, which an employer is likely to demand from me. This section is going to be very important for me as it is going to reveal my current situation. In the previous section, I described some of my past life experiences. I not only described the positive and negative experiences but also described what impact those experiences made on my personality. This section is going to be more attractive and appealing because here I am going to describe my current situation. Today, I am more confident and enthusiastic than ever. I have realized the importance of education in my life. I believe that a person is nothing without proper education. I have moved on to the united kingdom for higher education. I live near Heathrow airport along with my sister who is living here in the United Kingdom for getting higher education. Currently, I am studying business management from one of the most prestigious universities of the United Kingdom. In my past, I never thought of going to some other country for education but today I am a completely changed person with different thoughts. I regret those days when I hated to go to school. Now I feel that I must have taken interest in studies in my past life. I believe that poor performances in the high school make an impact on the future of a student. If a person takes interest in his high school studies, he gets success in his educational career whereas if a person does not like going to school, it becomes very hard for him to develop interest in studies in the future. But by the grace of God, I have managed to take interest in studies and the major factor behind that is the success of my father in business. He is running his company very well and he is the one who has motivated me to continue my education. My decision of going abroad and pursuing a degree in business management has proved to be good for me. I have started to develop an in-depth understanding of all issues related to the field of business management. The faculty of the university is very much talented and highly qualified and I believe I can get very good grades under their supervision. I always took interest in my father’s business and wanted to become a successful businessman just like my father. But in my past I didn’t know that I have to study hard and concentrate on studies in order to fulfil my dreams. But now I have realized that there is a lot of difference between an educated businessman and a less educated businessman. A highly qualified can easily manage all business activities and can take appropriate decisions. That is why I decided to come to the United Kingdom for higher education. I am doing really well in my studies now and my teachers are also very happy with my performance. Now I want to describe my personality which I think is completely different as compared to my past. Today, I am a very confident young man who can face all challenges of life efficiently. I have also become a hard working student as I mentioned earlier. Today, I take my decisions on my own instead of depending on other people to take decisions regarding my education or personal matters. I am also a skilled martial arts performer. I have won many prizes at the national level in Korea. Apart from that, I also possess excellent communication skills. I can effectively communicate with the people belonging to different backgrounds. I have developed excellent communication skills interacting with the people belonging to different countries. As I mentioned earlier that I belong to south Korea and have come here in the united kingdom for higher studies, it provides me with a good opportunity to interact with different people as many of my class mates have come from different countries. It is due to my excellent and effective communication skills and confidence that I have reached a good position in almost every field of life. I have started getting good grades in my studies particularly in the subjects of business management. My communication skills were not very good in the past when I was living in Korea. It is because, in Korea, I did not interact with the people belonging to other countries. However, in the United Kingdom, I interact with different people everyday, which has played a great role in improving my communication skills. When I came to the United Kingdom, my English was very weak. Then I joined an English language training institute which helped me a lot in learning English language. Here, I would also like to mention that I possess excellent problem solving skills. I can handle complex issues and can take effective decisions regarding those issues. I think that the high-level confidence has some direct relation with the decision-making skills of a person. If a person does not have confidence in himself, he cannot make appropriate decisions regarding any matter. I make appropriate use of my confidence and communication skills to deal with different kinds of problems, which occur in my life. I respect every religion of the world but obey the teachings of my own religion. My religion teaches me to be a polite, honest, and a humble person. My religion also teaches me to respect all humans and try to help them out in every difficult situation. Summing it up, I possess a dynamic personality, which is more confident, enthusiastic, and realistic than ever, and all this has happened due to my increased interest in business and higher education. Question 3: Where do I want to get to? As I mentioned earlier, I have a huge interest in business due to my father’s success in the field of business, so I want to become a businessman just like my father. At first, I have plans to join my father’s company as an employee and get some experience. After that, I have plans to open my own company as my father did. My father wants me to excel in the field of business and that is why he motivated me to get business education from the United Kingdom. I want to help my father in carrying out daily business activities. I want to make use of my knowledge, skills, and abilities to make father’s company gain competitive edge in the market. I am interested in becoming a successful businessperson, and for this reason, I am studying business management from one of the top universities of the United Kingdom. I want to get an in-depth understanding of all issues related to business management in order to be successful in my career. I have no plans to work here in the United Kingdom, rather I would like to go back to my home country and serve my nation. I want to make my country progress in every field of life and that can be only possible if its citizens get standard education from the top universities of the world. Every person does a lot for his own life but very few people do something for their nations. I want to be one of those people who give preference to their nations more than anything. Another reason for why I have come to the United Kingdom is that I want to improve my communication skills. I want to become proficient in the use of English language. I believe that I have become successful in improving my communication skills up to a large extent but still I think that I need more improvement. I also want to become familiar with the business environment of the UK as it will help me expand my father’s business in the UK. I want to establish my career in the field of business. I have no plans to do extended hours job, rather I want to be at the managerial post. My father has promised me that if I get a degree in business management from the United Kingdom, he will give me a good job in his company based on my skills, abilities, and talent. My father wants me to help him in his business and to take care of his company after him. Now I will write about some of my short-term and long-term goals which I want to achieve in my life. In this section, I am going to write about my short-term and long-term goals in some detail in order to provide a better understanding of my goals which I want to achieve in my life. My Short-Term Goals: Goals Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timed Sending my CV and cover letter to my father’s company in Korea. Apply for an internship position in a multinational firm based in London. My objective would be measurable in terms of the number of responses which I will get from the multinational firms. If I get my desired internship position, it will indicate that the goal is achievable In general, the duration of internship is one and a half months. Therefore, it will be possible for me to work during the summer holidays. The cover letters and CV will be ready by the end of second semester. Therefore, I will be able to send them to different companies at the end of semester. Making an effective and efficient time management plan. Informing possible schedule of work to the manager. The day-offs will be required on weekends in order to study. It requires checking the time table for the second semester for making plan for the next semester. It is achievable if the schedule is carefully developed It is impossible for me to work for more than 16 hours per week. Therefore, I will be available foe 3 days a week. The appointment is arranged with the manager in which we will discuss my working schedule before Christmas. Applying for the English proficiency certificate from the English language training institute In order to get the certificate, I need to complete the course. During the 4 weeks holiday, I will be able to go to the institute. It is achievable because I will get enough time to give the English language test. I need to read, write, and hear English in order to become proficient in English. The preparation time for the English language test is almost one and a half month from now. Thinking of ideas for my dissertation I need to think about those topics in which I take interest. Hence, I am thinking of some marketing topic because it is related to the field of business management. It will be useful if the researches related to marketing are done before the end of second semester. I have a few ideas which are related to the topic of marketing, such as internet marketing. I can get a lot of useful information about this topic from the internet and some other useful sources. The actual dissertation starts in the 3rd year of studies. However, It will be useful if the introduction and literature review could be done by the end of summer holidays. My Long-Term Goals: Goals Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timed Obtaining good grades in my higher studies. I wish to get good grades in my higher studies. The average marks of each subject need to be over 65%. A properly designed time table for studies will surely help me get good grades. I got marks 60% marks in my last year because I followed a time table. Therefore, following the time table is important to get over 65% marks. The final exams will be held in May. Therefore, it is extremely important to revise the course as soon as possible. Working as a business expert in my father’s company I am planning to work as a business expert in my father’s company in order to assist my father. In order to get the job of business expert, it is important to get good grades in all subjects. Knowledge of all business activities is extremely important in order to get my desired job. With good grades, I will be able to apply in any company for job. My final result and proper preparation of application form will take almost a couple of years from now. Achieving a higher post I wish to work in my father’s company. My long-term objective is to become marketing manager of the company. It depends on how I deal with different marketing issues related to the company. This can be achieved if I work with full dedication and show my consultancy skills. I possess the ability to become a business expert as well as marketing manager of any company. It may take more time to be a marketing manager. It also depends on my dedication and hard work. Promotion as a general manager Promotion to general manager of the company is my final long-term objective. Showing leadership skills decision making skills may lead to my promotion. It is achievable because I am sure I can achieve my desired goals due to my hard work. It is important for me to be responsible for my work in order to become a professional. I hope that I can be promoted after 2 to 3 years as a marketing manager. The action plan is based on my Short-Term And Long-Term Goals.
