Why did you choose your current university and major? What did you find most fulfilling and most difficult about your major? I had identified my aptitude for Engineering as I endeavored in many activities which were connected with the principles of engineering. Many of my hobbies were also closely associated with Engineering. I had participated in a number of co-curricular activities including science exhibitions which helped me develop my attitude towards Engineering. By the time I had to join for graduation I had decided to major in the current subject. My search for a cause effective engineering program ended up in ……………University as its commitment to action-based-learning attracted me the most .The …………… is really an exciting program which can offer me great opportunities to work closely with my classmates and practically learn to face real challenges. I admire the ………… learning style which heavily emphasizes on practices and systematic learning cycle. The most challenging experience about the subject was the vastness of its applicability. This forced me to read and research extensively on the subject. 3. Describe a situation, either professional or personnel, where you faced a particular difficulty. What was the outcome, what did you learn from the experience and what would you do differently if faced with a similar situation again? One if the most difficult situations that I had faced were taking forward the voluntary work as the Work Instructor during my high school days. All through my of my High School days, my leadership abilities and my affinity towards the society were proven as I enthusiastically led the show to arrange tutorials and allied events as a part of the voluntary work. I also designed a long-term social service program for immigrant girls. The objective was to help new immigrants to settle in and also, to provide them tutorial classes. This was tough task as all of them belonged to different cultural realities. The culture, people and systems were entirely alien to them. It was difficult to cope up with the ways in which many of them behaved and responded to various situations. I often observed that my team used to get disheartened by this. I inspired the faculty, co-students and some of the seniors to organize weekly discussion forums and other programs to keep up their interest. However, day by day this became a difficult task. In the process, I realized that many of the responses of the immigrants were based on the cultural realities of places they belonged to. For them, what they did was right. It was a great learning experience and I got useful insight into different cultures. I tried to read research papers and discuss about the respective cultural elements. Gradually, their responses and behaviors started making sense to me. Acknowledgement and understanding the cultural aspects of the immigrants gave me more acceptability amongst them. With this acceptability our job as cultural assimilators became easier. This provided me an opportunity to manage diversity and to interact with people from different cultures. This experience gives me a competitive advantage over others, as I can work well with people coming from different backgrounds. In a multicultural community, I am sure I will be able to adapt easier and contribute a lot. 4. Discuss a university or work-related situation where you have taken a significant leadership role. What did you learn from this situation with respect to yourself and others? During my high school days, I managed to win a very competitive social service organizing contest. This gave me the opportunity to be the lead member of a cultural exchange trip. This was a very enriching experience as there my team worked with the local social workers. I could gain access for my team to the government and other welfare organizations working in different areas of societal development. We were exposed to a number of burning issues of the society and I also got to review the interventions that were made. Different from previous volunteer work experiences, I could personally indulge in planning and implementation of welfare schemes. This changed my personal attitude towards the issues in the society and I would say, I started being more connected with the grassroots. Leading a volunteer team and keeping them motivated was a challenging but empowering experience. Also I learned a lot about project planning, implementation, budgeting, accounting and project monitoring. Another major improvement that I had through the process is that I improved my communication skills and leadership skills to a large extend, which I am sure is going to be a critical achievement all through my career. 5. Describe a risk you took that proved successful. Also describe a risk you took that was not successful. What did you learn? It was my idea to make my family invest in one of my friends’ company which was selling international educational products. When the mode of investment was considered, a detailed cost benefit analysis revealed that online trading as a safer option. The mechanism insisted that the company to invest in a virtual system which the family was new to. The decision of the family members however was based on a security point of view. I was of the concept as an emerging company, the new system would do nothing better than to discourage the hard working employees and would question their efficiency. This would directly reflect on the growth of the company. The challenge was to defend this idea amongst the family members who were in a rush for profit. The only way to execute it was to convince the family members on the growth rate projection of the company. However I could take them to confidence not to hurry in making the investment and to closely monitor the company’s working pattern for the next operational year. The relevance of investment as a long term deal and the fact that the allied business principles cannot be compromised against the magnitude of the incentive was made clear to them. I defended my stand on the point that the leading product of the company was still to make its place in the local market. I could successfully take them along with my idea to wait till the next market cycle before investing. The investors closely associated with the company for the next one year which could give them a trust in the company’s capabilities, qualities and execution. The company was meanwhile soaring towards excellence as the team worked hard. I arranged a meeting between the company’s top management and my family members to discuss possibilities the collaboration. This communication enhanced the feeling of trust amongst the investors on the prospects of the company. I also added educational resources ensuring the capacity building of the investors which diversified their concept of investment. Our perfect cooperation enabled the company to become an industry leader. Our returns had been steadily growing thereafter. Integral ideas when defended with reasonability and flavored with resources resulted in the motivation of the team. This gave the team a single direction to work out the idea to perfection. 6. Describe your most challenging and rewarding team-building experience. What insights did you gain from this experience? Also, describe a time when you were part of a team that didn’t work well, describe your role and what you learned from this experience? To lead a change, aiding development and positive work environment has to be a leader’s priority. Several incidents in my life testify me to be a change leader. Right from my college days, I had generated within me the urge to lead a change in the hardships of the poor, as I organized numerous donations and activities along with my friends to help the elderly, poor students, and sick people. Further in my professional tenure, the business leadership perceptive gained was used to successfully lead the voluntary charity events. When we initiated a social transformation campaign, the readiness of my team to serve the social cause needed an efficient leadership. Thus I led the team through a changed agenda to raise money for the sake of the process. Finally the change leader in me with an efficient team organized enough money as donation and over 20 volunteers to assist the programme. To lead a change in the attitude of the team is what differentiates a successful leader. While being in the board of the programme, I realized the need of a change in the approach of the team. Conventionally, the only matter of concern to the board was quantitative welfare measures. To lead an expansion and change in the mode of the work of the board to, I persuaded my team for their support. A series of lectures and extension programs were organized and finally my leadership could bring effective changes as the board’s influence on the society was expanded by positively engaging in sociological causes.
