Research and Writing Researching and writing skills are an important part of our academic lives. Learning how to collect and organize our thoughts into a coherent and properly articulated essay will help us later in college and life. From the time we are small, we learn our Abc’s and how to neatly write between the lines. Then later we’re introduced to the concept of words, sentences, paragraphs, thesis and essays. As we grow older, we learn that it is essentially very difficult to move forward without arming ourselves with these skills.
Research and writing definitely helps us to express ourselves and develop critical thinking abilities. It is an integral part of our lives which we’re always in need to work and improve on. Knowing how to manage and dedicate the right amount of time for research is one of my biggest achievements so far. Reading and filtering through books, articles, and websites helps me to gather a range of data for any writing tasks I have to complete. It helps me to see the type and variety of information that is out there.
I collect the relevant facts, reviews, data etc. and write them down as an outline along with any required examples and quotes. Just having a basic point form structure helps me to visualize and brain storm more ideas for a particular topic. There is no doubt that I have so much more to learn but I know that by following the strategies learned so far I can greatly enhance my skills. I find that organizing and formatting all the information collected is the hardest part for me. A lot of times I feel that I have great ideas and topics swimming around in my head but when it comes time to putting them down on paper, I don’t know where or how to start.
I know what I want to explain and have the relevant information, but it is when I have to write it so another reader can understand what I mean to say, I hit a road block. For example, when writing a typical 3-5 page essay, I have sufficient points and examples noted down, but introducing the topic and leading it into my thesis statement is something I still need to work on. In order to develop these skills I’m going to start writing a short journal everyday. It will give me great practice of expressing my thoughts, ideas and experiences.
This way I’ll be able to read and assess my progress later on. I have to include more reading into my routine and expose myself to new materials, styles and writings. Learning how to effectively write a basic 5-6 paragraph essay will give me a strong base for when I have to write lengthier articles and reports in college. For I know, I will be required to carry out more comprehensive research and gather a wider range of information and references. I truly realize the importance of a proper research and how it helps us to support what we write.
Through various writing projects we are continuously building upon what we have learned and honing our skills. Writing and researching on various topics is something we need in order to professionally communicate our thoughts. They’re an important skill to work on and have in order to achieve a strong academic background to help us in life. Writing is a natural way of expressing who we are and explaining concepts not only to others but also to ourselves. These skills arm us with the knowledge of how to become better writers and gain a perspective of our own, unique style.
