Alexandra Alexandre Eng 102 Prof Horna. Create a Order 507395 Topic: Create a thesis from “A Good man is hard to find" Flannery Connor, then write an essay with it. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is the title story by Flannery O’ Conner’s in the book, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories.” Grandmother’s concern for the children of Baily reveals her innermost feelings for their all-round growth as fine human beings. About the intended vacation she opines, “The children have been to Florida before, you all ought to take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad.
”(O’Conner, p.2) ‘See different parts of the world and be broad,’ is the punch line. Broad and pious values need to be implanted in the minds of children so that they grow up as world-citizens, free from the narrow domestic walls of selfish traits. The pages of human history soaked in blood of violence and crimes in the name of religion, language, race, color etc ask the profound question. How to bring peace in this Planet? The answer is easy to find. Eyes full of compassion, hearts full of sensitivity and the life that embraces positive qualities —enough, these alone are enough!
Such profound human values need to be implanted in the minds of children right from childhood. Exposure to difference parts of the world and with different people is one such practical lesson of life that must be taught to children at the formative stage of their life when their minds are impressionable. The results will be bad if children come into contact with wrong influences. In the story, the Grandmother is choosy about the social exposure of children when she mentions, “I couldn’t take my children [anywhere]…with a criminal like that loose.” (p.2) Create a….
2 With these comments, the Grandmother provides to the readers the social conditions prevailing then and the concern of the elders for providing right type of environment for the growth of children as good, broad-minded human beings. Experience-wise, the grandmother assumes the top position in the family. She raises her children and grandchildren and when that responsibility is done well, it is a great social contribution. Children with right values are assets to any nation. Astronomical sums are spent to maintain law and order (police administration) and taking care of the prisoners.
The elders of the family like the grandmother render excellent unpaid service to the society. Generally speaking, the heart of a grandmother is full of affection and she has great understanding to maintain unity amongst the family members. In the captioned story, even in a small activity like taking the children on a vacation, the grandmother thinks how it should contribute to welfare of the children. Wrong association even once, can spoil the entire life of a child. The impact of the negativities is powerful.
When the children are exposed to different situations, they unconsciously learn to adjust to them and that turns out to be a lifelong experience. As students of world history, politics and economics, we have seen that mass philosophies have failed to transform people and bring about peace in the world. Violence and force can never contribute to peace and social harmony. For the change to occur in the society, the mindset of each individual has to changer for the better. The wise saying goes—when the thoughts are changed, the mind is changed; when the mind is changed, the man is changed; Create a….
3 when the man is changed, the society is changed; when the society is changed, the Nations are changed. Changed Nations make world peace an attainable reality. Grandmother’s contribution to create a happy and harmonious family has to be understood in this context.
