Paraphrasing Assignment First Paragraph: [T]he two lovers are indeed so lost in each other as to be almost completely oblivious to what is going on around them. There is surely no self-assertion here. Nor does there seem to be any in the lady in black who, in praying to God, is surrendering herself to the Deity. Both the couple and the lady in black represent a strong contrast to Edna, who never really achieves the loss of self in love for another, and who is never portrayed as submitting herself to worship God in communion with others. (225) Paraphrased version: Both the lovers and the lady in black move in such fashion as how they ought to be by nature, remaining as they are, not departing from the consistent description.

Absolutely, the natural course of things with behavior on both does not permit any further exertion that may not be anticipated to relate to the basic single knowledge intended to keep them in the original, constant association. The unchanging character proceeds to establish in definite position both the prayerful lady in black and the inseparable lovers who have been so disposed to godly matters and eternal bond respectively. Unlike them, Edna has not yet realized any depth of significant intimacy with God and with her personal desire that potentially detaches her from current restrictions to dissolve into natural freedom (Church & Havener, 2008, p.225). Summary: As the lovers and the lady in black offer a view of distinct characters well-defined by their favorable nature, Edna appears to be too huge a difference with here situation (Church & Havener, 2008, p.225). Second Paragraph: The linguistic strategy of economy of stereotype is prominent in Kate Chopin's The Awakening.

Edna has a "quadroon nurse" (7) who is looked upon as a "huge encumbrance" (7) by Edna's children because it is the nurse who performs the duties of making sure the children look presentable. Edna is described as "not a mother-woman" (8), and this description is helpful in understanding why Edna eventually must end her life. But the nurse is never described or designated as anything other than a "quadroon." This word signifies that the nurse is black, and therefore easily dismissed from Edna's world.

But if the reader does not dismiss the nurse, it becomes obvious that "quadroon" tells the reader nothing about what the nurse looks like. Is she light? Is she dark? Fat? Skinny? She is described as meek; she follows the children "at the respectful distance which they required her to observe" (12). She knows her position in the world, and this contrasts sharply with Edna's realization of her own position, which is revealed a few lines after the nurse is seen following the children. Edna was beginning to realize her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the world within and about her.

This may seem like a ponderous weight of wisdom to descend upon the soul of a young woman of twenty-eight-perhaps more wisdom than the Holy Ghost is usually pleased to vouchsafe to any woman. (13) Paraphrased version: In Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, the economy of stereotype is a mostly prevalent device which was utilized by the author to designate Edna and the nurse into their types of characters as ‘not a mother-woman’ (Powell, 2009, p. 8) and ‘quadroon’ (p. 7) correspondingly. ‘Huge encumbrance’ was added to make emphatic the presence of nurse as possessing certain trait opposite that of Edna (p. 7). As if no other more accurate description would suffice, such linguistic tool presents an adherent, singular idea of a nurse being modified as quadroon.

It essentially alleviates the reader from becoming deflected to other assumptions about the nurse’s physical attributes when ‘quadroon’ alone is attached to the only profile Chopin wants her reading audience to picture. Powell (2009) observed that “she knows her position in the world, and this contrasts sharply with Edna’s realization of her own position.” With Edna exists an uncertainty as the nurse proceeds to pay her full attention to the children. From this stage develops a recognition of settlement that truly enables Edna to identify her real worth, allowing herself to be gathered within and be drawn to effectively interact with other individuals within her circle of influence.

Summary: The paragraph chiefly points the essential difference the quadroon nurse, though lower in rank, makes with Edna in a way that establishes a sense of stable disposition with the former. Edna is gradually taken to an intense pondering at this scenario and acknowledges a changing move for herself toward enlightenment (Powell, 2009, p.13). References Church, J., & Havener, C. (2008).
