Adverse Effects of Parliamentarianism The chosen text highlights the adverse effects of parliamentarianism and how it puts the fate of the nation in the hands of few chosen representatives. The main argument of the author revolves around the intellect and the level of expertise that is possessed by the few hundred representatives of the nation. Another aspect that is mainly discussed in the chosen text is that the parliamentary form of government exempts the elected bodies from taking responsibility of their actions.
The decision is taken on the basis of the majority vote of the representatives in the parliament therefore no individual figure can be blamed for any false decision or strategy. This reflects cowardice on the behalf of the chosen figures since no one has the courage to take responsibility for their actions. The author places a fraction of the blame on the media since they have the power to change the views and even desires of the masses. They go to the extent of digging up black patches from the history of the individuals who fall on their agenda of getting defamed, while the figures who are favored by them (for some reason) are linked with the hopes and happiness of the nation.
The representatives of the parliament are equipped with the power to give their opinions on every matter that is raised in the respective decision making body. The author rightly raises the issue that the intellect and expertise of these individuals is naturally limited to a few fields of life. They might not be familiar with the technicalities of many fields of life but they are granted the right to make a decision about it. This threatens the stability and progress of the bodies for which the decision is being taken for.
Matters are discussed as if they are a part of a game or race, whereas they should be dealt with productive discussions about the details and repercussions of the solution. Such instances of intellect and productivity are almost impossible to find in the democratic parliamentary form of government. The author further discusses the probable reason for the appointment of such incompetent representatives; the wirepuller of the government can easily influence these representatives and make them take decisions according to his will while staying in the background.
The author compared Germanic democracy with democratic parliamentarianism and stated that the former has an elected leader who is accountable for all the decisions and steps of the government. The decisions are not taken on the mere majority will of the representatives in the parliament; rather, the responsibility of the decision lies with the elected leader of the nation. The author negates the concept of democratic parliamentarianism and condemns the manner in which it functions. The author has raised some valuable arguments that are explained with convincing explanations and seems to have strong opinions regarding the respective system.
However, he has used some harsh analogies for the parliamentary representatives of the nation like scoundrels etc. The role of the media is also not supported by him as he feels that incompetent individuals can be portrayed as effective leaders by the help of the media. The author represents himself as a non-supporter of the democratic parliamentarianism and an advocator of Germanic democracy since the latter has a single elected leader responsible for all decisions.
