Assignment 3 Trouble-Shooting Report The most accessible restaurant to observe and comply with the requirements for the current report is one of the frequently visited fast-food chains, Burger King. Results of Observation (i) Description of Premises The Burger King restaurant visited is well kept on the outside premises without any litter or clutter as one entered their premises. The parking lot is clean, as well as the glass doors and long, wide glass windows. Inside the food store, the floor is well mopped; tables and chairs are kept shiny and clean, as needed. For some meals that need more preparation time, one heard from another customer, that the front desk personnel asked if the customer is willing to wait for about 10 minutes with the meal to be delivered on the customer’s table. In another situation, a customer seated beside me who has not been served his order after the promised 10 minutes needed to follow it up before the order was duly served. (iii) Description of Service and Food Offered Overall, the service lacked focus on customer satisfaction and the front desk personnel and other staff (administrative and cleaning) seem to be doing their tasks routinely without genuine enthusiasm for their jobs. There is no consistency in observing customer service protocols like the need to greet the customers as they enter the premises and to acknowledge gratitude when the customer leaves. Further, when there are delays in serving the food, no words of ‘sorry for the delay’ or ‘enjoy your meal’ in genuine concern were relayed to the customers. The food that one ordered and ate did not conform to one’s expectations. The fries were a little bit hard and one observed that there seemed to be some debris on the ice that was incorporated in the drinks (which of course, I complained about). b. Violations of Policy Based on one’s observations, the food store did not comply with policies of cleanliness, such as the need for frequent washing of hands, wearing proper attire, and observing proper protocols for customer service (customary greetings and needed responses in terms of delays in serving ordered food). There is also the need for more regular cleaning of the restrooms given the number of people who frequent the place and the need to ensure it in perfect cleanliness. Also, one observed that their cleaning materials: mops, cleaning rags to wipe morsels from tables and chairs need to be rinsed more often and replaced, as needed. These are also potential causes of spreading germs and viruses when not effectively rinsed and disinfected with proper cleaning ingredients. c. Recommendations for Improvement From the results of what were observed, it is therefore recommended that to improve on the delivery of food and service to a variety of clientele, Burger King should provide continuous training on improving customer service and in ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of the cleanliness outside and inside the premises. As required, proper attire must be adhered to at all times. Frequent washing of the hands must be appropriately observed and complied with. The supervisor should be more vigilant and observant in ensuring cleanliness, especially of areas most frequented by customers (the restrooms) and to make sure that cleaning materials and accessories are well kept and disinfected, as required. Genuine interest and enthusiasm from the staff would be ensured through regular training and to be more stringent in their recruitment policies. The food store must be able to screen applicants who are duly interested to be of service to people within the food chain industry. In addition, the owner must report violations, especially in terms of cleanliness to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) who should regularly visit their premises to make the employees more aware that an external agency monitors their operations and to give them suggestions, recommendations and guidelines for the upkeep of safety and protection of their food store.
