Health and Social Care Course: Canterbury Christ Church University Introduction Health and social care is a broad sector in service provision that combines fundamental knowledge from sociology, nutrition, biology, ethics, and law. According to Canterbury Christ Church University, integrating health and social care knowledge into the healthcare sector enhances service provision1. The need to improve the outcome of services provision in healthcare has led to Health and social care being offered in universities. Health and social care was integrated into the healthcare sector to provide support to the vulnerable people such as the elderly, children, disabled people, and the mentally challenged persons. As a health care assistance in theatres, I encounter and attend to patients going through very mind disturbing conditions. The art of handling and communicating with patient going into, coming from, or while in a theatre room, require skill. A trained health and social care specialist is skilled to handle patients with kindness, care, respect, and dignity. Acquiring a certificate of higher education in health and social care will help in understanding the principles of health care, planning and delivery of services, as well as, ethical aspects. Canterbury Christian church University offering the course is known for academic excellence and professionalism. The paper will focus on the impacts that learning Health and social care course has on me in handling patients in my department. Impact of learning Health and social care to patient care Effectively collaborating across professional margins - The programme equips an individual with the information and skills that are of value and importance in his or her area of profession2. It is always overwhelming to have the capability to offer the right information to the right person when expected to do so. The course also offers a balance between the policy, practice, and academic knowledge. Work-related skills gained will greatly contribute in communication and solving problems. Having a better insight in area of expertise - academic knowledge and training in health and social care, helps appreciate ones field of work. Exposure to information on the history, the current conditions and the future plans in health and social care gives an individual a deeper insight. It enhances the inter-personal, theoretical and practical knowledge needed in improving effectiveness at work place3. Making inform decisions – academic knowledge and training in health and social care enable the staff access, understand and interpret information to patients from all walks of life. Making decisions that adhere to healthcare standards based on evidence and good practices. The module on decision making further gives the meaning of evidence-based practices. Informed decisions involve incorporating knowledge from fields such as sociology, nutrition, biology, ethics, and law to make the right decision at the right time. Making decisions is inclusive of those that are made by the patients themselves4. It is, therefore, the duty of every health care assistant to inform the patient of their conditions without hurting them. The assistant should also be capable of acknowledging what the patient can do on his or her own and when to offer support. For instance, a health care assistant should be capable of assisting patients in eating, drinking, and bathing. Understanding the Anatomy and Physiology of human body- the programme requires the healthcare professionals taking health and social care course to study a module that equip them with the knowledge of human Anatomy and Physiology. The module focus on the all human body functions with emphases on the main body systems. As an assistant in the theater, the knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, offer guidance in delivering services in my area of expertise. Working as a team - in a health care setting, working as a team improves the outcome of services provided. The knowledge acquired by the end of the course equips an individual with the features need to participate in team work effectively. The course entails all the aspects of working in a multiagency environment5. These aspects are realized by examining the differences and similarities in other professionals and the impact on personal performance. Additionally, the course examines the dynamics of leadership and communications in teamwork. Updated in current Ethics and Law related to healthcare Practices- there are ethics and laws that are specifically applicable to health and social care aimed at improving the capability to make an ethical decision. The course offers an opportunity to study the moral aspects in ethic that are applied in the modern approaches. The ethical aspects studied are those that incorporate ethical principles used in solving health and social care issues6. On the other hand, the course offers a broad understanding of the law from both civil and criminal perspective. For instance, an assistant that has the knowledge in health and social care is in a position to guide patients in making law based decision by themselves and when to involve a third party such as an advocate. The course draws greatly from cases of legal and ethical issues in everyday practices in healthcare. Compassion at workplace and towards patients - the course equips and individual with the values of dignity, kindness, trust and respect. These values initiate a therapeutic relationship with patients and co-workers. The practices encourage the development of both personal and organization values with considerations to quality of services. The major consideration in assessing compassion is by practicing self-reflection depending on the individual’s competence at work. Conclusion Health and social care is currently one of the major and most influential practices in the health sector. The quality of services provided in a health care setting whose staffs possess the knowledge in health and social care is of high quality. The impacts of studying health and social care course especially for health experts already in the industry are enormous. The individual by the end of the course is equipped with the knowledge to provide better patient care, working in a team and remaining abreast with law and ethic.
