Application of a Nursing Theory: Jean Watson Theory Affiliation Application of a Nursing Theory: Jean Watson Theory Jean Watson is an American nursing theorist born in West Virginia. Watson had in her honor six honorary doctorates degrees. Her education in the field were mainly in nursing, educational counseling and psychology and mental health nursing. The Jean Watson theory was published in 1988 in human science and care in nursing. The theory aims at aligning the humanistic and health requirements in the field of nursing.
The theory creates an understanding in the nursing field in four approaches; health, human being, nursing and environment (Nursing Theories, 2012). Through the theory a nurse may be able to develop a exceptional personal philosophy on nursing. Human Being From this approach, Watson cites the human being as general form of existence of life. A human being should be viewed by the caregiver as more than a life in need of medical help. To effectively attend to human beings, effective communication and assistance on their general being is required.
The process is based on increasing the ability of the patient to cope with non-medical effects of their current situation (Watson, 2011). This goes beyond only addressing the medical issue in a particular body part. In generating a personal philosophy, a nurse should be able to understand the humanistic requirement of a patient during caregiving (Nursing Theories, 2012). This increases their efficiency of service delivery. Health As defined by the WHO health refers to the absence of illness, maintenance of high level functioning and proper physical, mental and social functioning (Watson, 2011).
A nurse should strive to ensure a patient under their care is provided with these requirements. The three factors form the basis of proving health to a patient. Environment Watson is of the assumption that caregiving has existed in every society. Caregiving in the society is not hereditary as professional are required to develop unique ways of coping with the provision of the society there provide care. From this provision, one may assert the role of nursing is of significant impact to the society.
Watson (2011) develops the assertion that each environment or society has varied perception on medicine. The understanding of these differences allows the ability to create unique and effective care giving processes (Watson, 2011). Nursing The theory defines nursing with the requirement to apply holistic approaches to caregiving (Nursing Theory, 2013). This involves health promotion, illness prevention, caregiving to the sick and restoration of health. These provisions should define the role of a nursing professional in their practice and environment (Nursing Theory, 2013).
From Watson’s theory it is evident that the role of a nurse is represented by the global requirement to health of the professional. This should form the basis of the philosophy embraced by a nursing practitioner. From the Jean Watson theory, the role of nursing is defined based from a more humanistic and holistic approach. The theory described the role of nurses in the practice, society, human being and health. From the theory, one may create a personal nursing philosophy that guides their role and functions as caregivers.
In addition, the philosophy designed from the theory would address all the requirements from a nurse to human beings, the society, health and the field in general. References Nursing Theories.
