The CDC puts the prevalence of diabetes among Hispanics as 66% higher than other white Americans. The CDC further estimates that 2%-10% of Hispanic mothers develop gestational diabetes (cdc.gov). Nursing Diagnosis:Blood sugar tests to determine the amount of excess glucose in the blood.Blood sugar test for a fasting persons. A fasting person is deemed not to have eaten in the last 12 hours.Measuring the sugar level of a fasting person, otherwise called the oral glucose tolerance test.Readiness for Learning: The community showed readiness to learn by:Staying attentive to the proceedings of the sessionAsking relevant questions in the leaning processReporting to the venue before the scheduled time.

Learning Theory to Be Utilized: The study will use cognitive theory. The theory asserts that individuals are rational and can adjust their lifestyle by participating in activities that promote the change of behaviors. As such, the teaching experience will endeavor to change the reasoning of the people by showing reasons that the can take charge of their health and avert incidences of diabetes. Goal: The HP2020 objectives outline diabetes as a health concern. The teaching supports object D1 that include reducing the number of new cases of diabetes, D3 that includes reducing the deaths caused by diabetes, D5 that supports glycemic control for persons with the disease and D6 that enhancing lipids control.

Diabetes is widespread in the Mexican community and thus are eager to learn. The CDC has clear statistics that diabetes affects more Hispanics than other Americans. The disease causes pain, discomfort and disrupts the social welfare of the people.How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives The Alma Ata declarations are poised to enhance the general health of the people and equity in access to health. The initiatives recognize that health is a factor of social economic, cultural and individual a behavioral factors.

As reported by the CDC, the Hispanic community is highly vulnerable to diabetes and thus should be enlightened more about it to be at par with other Americans. Develop Behavioral Objectives (Including Domains), Content, and Strategies/Methods: Behavioral Objective and DomainContent Strategies/Methods1.The participants will describe the symptoms of diabetes according to their own understanding1.The observable symptoms of diabetes include; excess thirst, fatigue, weight loss, low immunity, urination with short intervals.1.After a thorough discussion of the symptoms, the participants will write the symptoms down in their notebooks without the any reference to the teacher.2.Students will outline the lifestyle causes of diabetes2.

The lifestyle causes include unbalanced diets with excess sugar, low physical activity, smoking and excess drinking of alcohol2.An interactive chart that shows all the common cases of diabetes arising from the people’s lifestyle. The class will make a detailed discussion about each of the factor and its relation to diabetes3.In relation to lifestyle causes of diabetes, students will outline possible ways of reducing new cases of diabetes3.Prevention of new cases include; having balanced diet, avoid foods with excess sugar, reduce alcohol intake and abstinence from smoking3.

The session will use PowerPoint slides to show how the causative factors can be reversed to bring about a healthy community.4.Participants will list the diabetes tests that can be used to ascertain the presence of the disease4.The major tests include the hemoglobin A1c test, dilated eye exam and foot exam4.Participants who have diabetes and are ready to talk about it will present this section. They will explain to others the tests they underwent before they were diagnosed with the disease. Creativity: I will project quick PowerPoint presentation to provide an eye-catching introduction for the session.

Consequently, the brochures will be colorful and attractive to read.I will also dedicate several sections, such as testing of diabetes, to the fellow audience to teach. Planned Evaluation of Objectives 1) TestsTest will be adjudicated before and after the session to show whether the session has increased the knowledge about the disease or not. 2) QuestionnairesThe program will use questionnaires to determine the effectiveness of the program. Example; did the presentations influence your future decisions on diet?3) Open discussionsThe evaluation strategy will allow participants to discuss other issues that relate to the disease and were not discussed in detail to show their level of understanding.

Planned Evaluation of Goal: I will maintain close contact with a sample of 10 participants to observe their heath behavior.I will ask for statistics from local hospital of Hispanics inquiring about diabetes.Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher (Process Evaluation):At the end of the teaching, the participants will fill teacher and process evaluation forms. The forms will be anonymous and will not require personal details. Sample questions include; did the process meet your expectations?

Did you learn something new about diabetes? How professional were the teachers? How organized was the presentations? Will the information you have gathered influence your future lifestyle decisions? Barriers: The main problem will be education differences in the population. Some participants may have basic information about the disease and other may not be aware. In this regard, the teaching session will reconcile the two groups and start from scratch.Another possible barrier is disruptive crowds.

I will use crowd control techniques such as redirecting rowdy people or asking them to leave the hall.Communication: I will start with an eye-catching PowerPoint video that will outline the basics of diabetes and the introductions of all items to be covered in the session. The participants will thus be eager to learn more about the contents.The session will end with a video on the disease. The video will provide testimonials of people who have managed to control diabetes and people who are at risk the diabetes but have managed to stay healthy.
