The nurses who saved the world and gave back its humanity The nurses who saved the world and gave back its humanity The world has gone crazy and slid into a tinder box. It used to be just Middle East but now is already the world. Militants are no longer just ISIS and its kindred Al Qaeda but the Christian’s also jumped into the fray. It would have been a religious war except that even the agnostics and the atheists are engaged. No more rules, no more Geneva Convention to follow just sheer barbarity likened to the Dark Age. The agenda are even unclear. Was it establishing a caliphate? Ending terrorism, non-intervention, non-proliferation of WMD or self-defense? No, it is not clear. What is clear however is hatred. None seems to care about each other anymore. So the war went on. So fierce and so long with all sides wanting to win it badly that all resources, both material and human were directed to the war effort. It had gone too long that once the rich countries of United States and Europe had become destitute and so are those in the Gulf Countries. Nobody seems to win the war but the very idea that the hatred of both sides is fed with destruction and maim, is already enough to justify the war effort. Everybody seems to be a soldier. Except for the nurses. They were not part of the destructive aspect of war for they are assigned to heal the wounded and the dying. They also find no reason to join in the war nor have the stomach for the killings which is reduced to barbarism. With all the despair, killing around them, the nurses just comforted themselves with their profession working diligently with the consolation that they are able to touch those who are under their care which is a big relief in a time when people no longer care about each other. It is because hate seems to become the norm and the air that people breathe. Hate became so thick one can almost touch it and anything beyond it such as love, compassion, care and humanity seemed to be consumed all by hate. Then there was Florence and her friend Nightingale. Probably the aberration in the present order of things. The two of them were the head nurses of two opposing forces in the world, the western part of the world now dubbed as Sodom and the eastern part of the world known as Gomorrah. Both Florence and Nightingale were friends when they were still in nursing school but were separated when the war broke out the very day after their graduation. Florence had to go back to her home country in the United States while Nightingale had to go back to the United Arab Emirates. Their regions who used to be friends suddenly became at war and they did not understood why. The two chose not to understand it as the hate behind this conflict may rub on them. So instead, they just perform their vocation as nurses diligently even beyond the call of duty. Because of the enormity of the dead and the wounded, the two were suddenly thrusted into positions of being head nurses being graduates of Ivy Leagues. But these appointments did not come without criticism because of their youth and lack of experience. Instead however of retaliating and adding to the air of conflict, Florence and Nightingale spent their energy on attending the wounded and the sick, and even the dead. What they lack in experience they over compensated it with idealism and true professionalism of a nurse. They were untiring and probably a soothing mist like the morning dew to those whom they took cared of. Soldiers who were mortally wounded fastly recovered to the aghast of their officers. This is compounded by the fact that these soldiers became less fierce after their recovery. Their officers only theorized that they were traumatized and ignored what happened to the soldiers. This war is just talking too long and should end now. Its length is already becoming an enemy. We should make an assault now or never to end this! Blurted General Patton. So an assault was assembled and executed. Unfortunately, this assault was telegraphed by their enemy and received heavy bombardment upon their approach. They suffered many casualties and among those was General Patton and the President’s son Lt. Washington. General Patton and his officers were mortally wounded together with the son of the President of the United States Lt. Washington. Immediately, they were taken out of the crash site and take to the Abu Dhabi hospital. Nightingale immediately attended to the wounded but their supplies of antibitiotics are out of stock and probably will take a couple of weeks before production will come in. They do not have time because both the General and the President’s son badly needed it or they will die. Nightingale thought fast. She remembered her best friend Florence. Without hesitation she grabbed the phone and called Florence if she still have a stock of antibiotics. Without hesitation, Florence said she had plenty and sent it to Nightingale right away. Luckily, the antibiotics came in time to save General Patton and the Presidents son’s lives. The two were shocked when they regain consciousness being in an enemy’s hospital. They were however assured that no harm will come to them. Care was given to them and the nurses took special effort to comfort them and made them feel a valued patient instead of an enemy. Little by little, the General and Lt. Washington begun to appreciate the hospital and its nurses. The ambiance of the hospital in itself was a relief because it was not only clean but also pleasant. There was enough sunlight, garden where they are walked through their wheelchair. The nurses looked sharp and professional in contrast to the shabby and stinking demeanor and smell of their soliders. They were nice and attentive to their every need and even took English lessons to be able to socialize with them. General Patton and Lt. Washington did not feel threaten. The hospital was so well managed and the nurses were so professional that it was as if their country was not at war. Soon enough, General Patton and Lt. Washington got well and became worried that might be taken as prisoners or worst, executed. But no, their surprise was added when Florence fetch them to be taken back to the United States and apologized that they decided not to send them home early until they have fully recovered because it could jeopardize their health. So off they went back to the United States without any hitch or condition. By now, General Washington understood why his wounded soldiers no longer become fierce when taken cared of by nurses - for they felt compassion, socialization and spirituality that did not only heal them but also gave back their sense of humanity. Then things became clear to General Patton. This war is insance and we do not even understand what is the cause. Let’s negotiate! So he recommended a negotiation to the President who readily accepted the proposal because his son was taken cared of by the enemy without condition. And to their surprise, the negotiation for peace was readily accepted and again, without condition just to end the hostitlity and restore back the peace. It did not take long for the two countries to become friends again and this can be owed to the two nurses Florence and Nightingale who showed professionalism, devotion, compassion and spirituality in treating the General and the Lt. that gave them back their sense of humanity.
