Lecturer The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Recommendations Having been established in 1970, IOM has played a very significant role in providing authoritative and unbiased advice to the government and other stakeholders who are charged with the responsibility of making decisions in the health care sector. Of the eight recommendations given in 2010 in its Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report, I would like to advocate for the full implementation of recommendation 4 which emphasized the increase of baccalaureate degree holder nurses to 80% by the year 2020.
In my opinion, this is a wise idea because increasing the number of such proportions would improve the quality of services to the people. When the country is equipped with such a big number of professionals, it becomes much easier to satisfy the diverse needs of clients throughout the nation (DeWit 322). The acquisition of a baccalaureate degree is of great value because it can improve the standard of healthcare in the country. Therefore, it should be implemented by bringing the public and private sectors together.
First, the health care organizations within the country should urge all the nurses with diploma and associate degree qualifications to enroll in a baccalaureate degree program upon the completion of their courses (DeWit 319). Besides, both the public and private funders should be ready to work as a team. They should allocate enough funds to support baccalaureate programs. This would enable many nurses to enroll in it. Last, but not least, the U.S. Secretary of Education, Health Resources and Services Administration, and other agencies should avail loans and grants for the nursing students who are willing to pursue baccalaureate degree programs.
These would make it much more accessible to them whenever they need it.
