Nurses and other medical workers are faced with ethical dilemmas in their practice. The basis of their dilemma results from the conflicting views of medical personnel and those of their patients. This paper discusses the ethical principles of consequentialism, utilitarianism, egotism beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy and justice as depicted in the film Who's Life Is It Anyway.

Consequentialism demands that our actions should be governed by the anticipated consequences (Sylvain, 2010). Thus, Ken’s doctor required him to remain under medical care beyond his wish, due to his anticipation of positive results. The actions of the doctor were in line with his utilitarianism principle. This is because the doctor was more interested in testing therapeutic procedures than in Ken’s comfort. However, egotism does not prevent medical workers from acting in a selfish manner since they have their personal interests. Moreover, most medical practitioners are compelled to work for the interest of other people by their beneficence code of ethics (Sylvain, 2010). This proves why Ken’s doctor wanted him to remain under medical care despite pressure from Janet and his own conscience.

Thus, the principle of autonomy offers immunity to medical workers for retaining a patient in a hospital beyond their wish. This is because medical workers have higher responsibilities and understanding than patients.
