Research or Professional Interest I chose four areas of interest in the following order of priority Health care financing 2. Health system 3. HIVprevention 4. Informatics health Description 1. Health care financing is about balancing the flow of finances in and out of the health care agencies or units involved in the delivery of health care services. It involves budgeting, accounting, auditing, lobbying for more funds, investing, and purchasing for the health care unit or institution. 2. Health system refers to the entire process of health care and the interaction of the different health care professionals. It involves the tools of health delivery – in terms of human resources, equipment, supplies, and the use of such resources for the benefit of a patient. The health system is a formal and orderly process made to function through the expertise and corresponding functions of health professionals involved in the care of patients. 3. HIV prevention mainly relates to health education. There is no other way to prevent HIV than by the education of the people about the disease, its causes, mode of transmission, and means of prevention. HIV prevention involves the active process of informing other people – children, adolescents, and adults – about the disease and how they can avoid getting it and how they can prevent its spread. This process can entail involving oneself in lectures in schools and health centers; making posters, pamphlets, and other educational materials on HIV and posting or making such materials available in schools, clinics, health centers, town halls, pharmacies, and other public institutions. 4. Informatics health is the process of digitizing the health system or process. It is about bringing health care services and the system online and accessible to the public. Informatics health is about using computers in data entry in hospitals and other health care institutions. It is about using such data to make a more dynamic and technologically updated process in health care delivery. Statement of Purpose My motivation in life and in enrolling in this course is my need to prove that learning can occur and can still happen at any age or stage of one’s life. I also want to learn more and to learn as much as I can about the practice and about the innovations available in the practice. Learning is a powerful motivator for me because it is a very engaging and invigorating process for me. I managed to attain a Bachelor Degree in Laboratory Medicine in the year 2005-2006 and I followed that with a year of internship in a hospital. Such internship enabled me to acquire practical experience. It taught me numerous skills – skills that I was not able to gain in my classes. In order to enhance my academic knowledge, I enrolled myself in the Master of Science in Healthcare Administration, and will successfully attain such degree from the California State University on December 2010. Besides my academic learning, I am currently working as a Student Assistant in the American Language Program and such work has been an amazing scholarly experience for me. In particular, it is my belief that the process of learning should persist, and that belief has now become a tool of survival for me in this spirited and competitive globe. In this regard, to continue strive to achieve more, it is my anticipation that attaining a Doctorate in Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership-PHD will be an important step towards accomplishing my objectives of wanting to make a valuable contribution in the global society. Until now, one of the greatest lessons of my life has been the reality that revolves around imperfections that exist in every individual, and how, such imperfections are one of the major qualities that distinguish people from each other in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I feel blessed to be imperfect, but for the most part, I have been successful in proving myself as one of the excellent practitioners in my field. More specifically, confidence has always remained an imperative part of my personality. It has also facilitated my process of accomplishing goals and objectives while helping me cross barriers and confront challenges with academic maturity and intellectual capacity. On the other hand, weaknesses have also been a significant part of my life and these weaknesses have turned me into a practical and rational individual. However, I consider myself victorious in turning my weaknesses into strengths. For instance, I have a very compassionate nature and this nature has proven to be a weakness for me. Fortunately, I am now a more realistic individual who has a potential in bringing about constructive alterations in this society. For which reason, I have chosen to continue my lifelong learning experience at your reputable institution. Coming from the conservative country Saudi Arabia and being female, I have confronted many challenges; however, I remained confident throughout these challenges. I have also remained steadfast in the belief that my values and my confidence will continue to facilitate me in the learning process. My academic plans at present is on enrolling with the PhD program and to find further fields of interest in research through the different courses available with your institution. However, I am also very much interested in the fields of research that are concerned with genetic studies. I believe that even as there are various ethical issues with these researches, the future direction of research is in genetic studies. My skills for research include analytical and critical writing skills as well as the values of patience, focus, and determination. My career goals are now gearing towards a more research inclined career. I believe that advancements in health are achievable through research – and that with the coordination and collaboration of various people from different fields of the practice such advancements are effective as fact-finding tools in research. Personal history statement I am a married woman with a two-year old baby who believes that education should not end at a certain age. Instead, it should be a continuous process set to continue regardless of one’s age. As an international student, I appreciate the traditional discourse, yet I possess a progressive perspective as well. I admire cultural fundamentals, yet I feel the calling to forge my own career independently. Ironically, my calling towards Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership-PHD turned into a possibility only because I disagreed with the belief that the learning process ends at a certain period or age in life. My nature has always been to confront suppositions, and I feel good about endeavoring always to recreate myself with greater determination. As a result, such nature has enabled me to improve and enhance my personality and level of learning irretrievably. By having faith in my capability to develop, I have now challenged myself to become a leader in the field, to resist the limitations of this materialistic world, and to rise above my various limitations. I have decided that by overcoming my limitations, every step towards the learning process will provide me an opportunity to bring a positive change in myself, as well as the people around me. As an Arab woman, I have often experienced discrimination from other people about my race. Other people have been quick to judge my accent and my cultural roots – translating this to mean an inferior academic capability. As a result, I have had to work harder than other students in order to prove that I have equal or sometimes better, skills and capabilities. In the process, I found out that I could push myself to superior levels of knowledge if I try hard enough and if I exert more effort into my activities. Because of my Arab roots, my social and cultural interactions have mostly been with fellow Arabs. I have tried to interact with other social and cultural groups but I have not been accepted well among them. As a result, I have not been exposed to the practices of other cultural groups. Most of my knowledge about them has been confined to the knowledge gained from the TV. Other challenges that I have encountered were mostly in relation to my English speaking skills. English has not always been my strongest point but, by further challenging myself to learn and perfect the language, I have also managed to make the learning process easier for me. I believe that my life experiences would help contribute to my chosen field because these experiences provide a perspective on how to balance various commitments in life – how each challenge can be a learning experience for the next challenge. These experiences are also learning experiences because they can later help improve the results and the outcomes of future problems or issues. I have particularly carried out a wide-ranging exploration of your reputable institution, and in the process, I have come to develop a profound admiration for the faculty and such admiration has inclined me to choose your institution for the attainment of my Doctorate in Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership-PHD. I am planning to serve underrepresented segments of society by actively seeking out these underrepresented segments and reviewing why they are under-served and underrepresented. Some of them may be under-served through health resources – others, underrepresented in their union and place of employment. I believe I can work with these individuals by talking to them – interviewing them and researching about their lives and their activities. I also need to review the current health policies available to them based on the programs of the government. After establishing which services are available and which services are actually reaching these people, then through further research, I can review where the gaps in services are. Then, suggestions to the concerned authorities can be made based on the concrete research and proof. Future interests or goals My career goal is to complete the doctoral program successfully and to acquire one of the best positions in this field. In order to reach such goals I have studied about the education profession and I have been gaining enormous respect for the field, especially when I see the impact that the field is having on numerous lives. I am very certain and convinced that by dealing with various challenges, it is possible for me to be successful in accomplishing my objectives, in gaining more knowledge, and in developing academic maturity. Furthermore, I always had a calling towards the field of education, and achieving a career in this profession will provide the perfect opportunity to express my personality and achieve my goals. Until now, I have been able to utilize my capability and energy to acquire my Masters degree; and I believe that I will put the same and even more effort during the acquisition of a Doctorate degree from your reputable institution. This confluence of goals and objectives and confidence has inclined me to continue and expand my scope of learning by enrolling in the doctoral program at your educational institution. Furthermore, to acquire a critical understanding in different aspects of organizational theory, and educational leadership, I felt that the Doctoral Program would help facilitate this understanding. I believe that the presence of excellent faculty with the amalgamation of exceptional academic environment would enable me to continue my lifelong learning experience in an effective manner. With the much that I have currently achieved in life and with a strong passion and commitment to learn, I believe that being in the Doctoral program would be my personal approach in making a contribution towards developing and improving the lives of my family members, society, and the entire global society. Lastly, I would like to express gratitude for considering my application for the Doctoral program in Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership-PHD. Read More
