By looking at how rap evolved through the literature review, I hoped to understand my topic better. I also hoped to learn something about rap songs and their meaning to the individuals who are drawn to them, as well as their personal experience with rap music, i.e., how rap music affects their emotional states. Additionally, my literature review sought to answer the following question: What is it about rap song that in spite of the controversy and highly aggregating and crude lyric, it remains one of the top-selling musical genres in the world?

I wondered to what extent the personal experiences of the rap artist had any influence over the lyrics of their songs and how much, if any, of their personal experience goes into their song and what ratio is pure imagination. In conclusion, the desire to belong to a given rap group or school of thought influences the social learning of young adults. Also, the desire to identify with a given rapper or rap storyline can put a teenager in a position where she or he might end up doing what is wrong just to ease the inner psychological conflicts that an adolescent might be experiencing from the wider society.

My literature review will cover the following in examining rap music as a spiritual redemptive tool: (a) A brief history of the advent of rap music, (b) The meanings of rap music and the many misconceptions surrounding the genre will be explained, (c) A review of Rap music from a purely psychological standpoint, (d) How media and society perceive rap music will be explored, as well as the subject of racial identity as it relates to rap music, and (e) Government censorship as an invasive form of state control and the possible consequences of giving the state the power to regulate our music, (f) effect of music on the brain.
