Comparative analysis of “yesterday” by the Beatles and “miss you” by the Rollin stone The Rollin stone d fourth in the greatest artistes of all-time list is arguably one of the most-popular English rock bands from the early 1960’s. Formed in the year 1962 by; Stewart, Jones, Richards, Jagger, Wyman and watts. Led by Richards and Jagger, It was in the vanguard of British invasion of bands that were very popular in the US between 1964 and 1965. The rolling stones’ were identified with their counterculture of the 60’s they were rebellious and youthful (McPherson, 64). The group was instrumental in making the blues a significant part of rock and roll. It also had a role in focusing the blues culture into less sophisticated blues from the blues that were focused on internationally at the time. The less sophisticated blues had been typified by among others Water’s writer of Rollin stone that the group was later to be referred to (Clayson, 63).
The Beatles is a rock band that has origins in Liverpool UK Formed in 1960. The band initially consisted of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr. Their genre of music had roots in the 1950’s rock and roll; however, the band later had experiments on several other genres such as hard rock and pop ballads (Spitz, 24). Their popularity surged with the Beatle mania of the 1960’s, their song’s sophistication entrenched them as the embodiment of ideals that shared in the Social cultural evolution of the era.
For three years, they established themselves playing in Liverpool clubs. With their team, the group grew into a professional crew and enhanced their music. In tandem with the Beatle mania popularity that was growing in the UK for the band. The bands popularity grew internationally leading the British invasion of the pop market in the US. From 1965, the band is considered to have produced some of their finest art. They enjoyed a successful career individually after the group broke (Spitz, 52).
The Beatles released yesterday as a single in 1965 from the album Help. As opposed to other Beatles, songs yesterday had significant difference from the other of their songs. The song written solely by McCartney thou credited to Lennon too was different from the Beatle’s image. The song has been trapped in controversy of its production. In one statement Paul claims he wrote the song in their 1964, tour in France. However, that cannot be ascertained given that between the time of [production and when he claimed he wrote it The Beatles released two albums. That raises’ questions of why yesterday did not feature in one of the albums. One explanation could be that Yesterday was not immediately accepted by all the Beatles or it is not true that he wrote it then. In another statement in Paul’s biography the song is said to have been a melody dream that he could no ascertain if it belonged to someone or not. While there is no evidence to attest to this it is more accurate (The Beatles)
Miss you is a track from Rollin stones debut album some girls. The song came at a time when many think was Rollin stones Golden age. Jagger wrote the song but Richards was accredited as co-writer, as was norm with the Rollin stones official production. The Rollin stone was a disco song. However, the issue of whether Miss you was a jam met for the disco from the start is unclear.
Miss you and yesterday have several differences. First is the target audience, While Miss you was targeted to mostly disco goers Yesterday was a song to listen to not dance to. However Yesterday could be danced to thou it was not considered as a dance jam from conception. For the Rollin stones the target audience while kneeling towards disco had a fairly large audience. That is because the number of Disco goers in the 1960’ was very high. Consequently, the two songs received a multitude of followers with different lifestyles and tastes. However, while miss you alienated a large audience it was propelled by its disco elements to the top of the charts (Stones).
Yesterday expressed an encouragement theme that was ideal for the depression years in the US and UK. The timing was about exact and thus was well received as a bias to the general feeling. Many people wanted something to push on and what is better than coming from music (beatles). Miss you share a compassionate theme it would not have gone wrong given that compassion is party and of many individuals’ life’s. With such a theme, it was almost certain to captivate audiences as a bias to the theme. Yesterday musically is completely harmonic structure. Never the less it features other elements including tempos complex lyrical structures coupled with a smooth upbeat sound. All indications from the song’s production indicate the desire for a sonic song. While miss you had a heavy baseline with drums and horns that gave it the Disco sound.
Despite the differences, the two songs have similarities. One is the influence of the 1960’s rock and roll. It cannot be escaped that both bands were heavily influenced by the 1960’s social culture. At the time of production there was a deep divide in the social lifestyle’s of the people both in the US and UK. Considerable percentage of people loved listening to rock and roll music. The bands exploited this divide and produced hit tracks that attracted large following albeit from different divides.
Remarkably, both songs may not have been necessarily a collective work. While Richards and Lennon take credit as co-writers, the works were largely individual pieces (The Beatles). Whereas, both were hits it is not a guarantee that without the other band members it would have been otherwise. Nevertheless, it formed a it is a great bond that signified the unity of the bands such a song would have pushed the individual artistes to solo careers that would have shortened the legacy of the two bands. In this regard, The Beatles and The Rollin stone seem to have a similarity in the bonds that saw them withstand a lot in the course of their legacy. Without which, may be the two bands would not have excelled to the heights they achieved (Stones).
Notably both songs use diagonal vocals to advance their themes. As outlined above the songs theme had a huge influence on its reception. It was, therefore, important how the themes were delivered to the audience. Diagonal vocals presented both bands with the best way to deliver their themes in a manner that would captivate the audience. While diagonal vocals were easier to catch up it made it easier for fans to sing along the artists. Musically the songs are different. The differences that they had made it very difficult to unite them under one genre. While both were influenced by rock and roll, the heavy harmonica used in yesterday and the Dominant bass line for Miss you are irreconcilable. The two songs were equally quality production with enormous talents in writing and performance.
Audience reception of the two songs paints a picture of similarity in popularity. The Rollin stones hit the top of the charts with their single miss you. Similarly yesterday featured at the top. That is despite their appealing to different audiences they were successful commercially in sales and reception. Yesterday however is more inspiring in many ways than miss you.
