Music Elements I believe that the most significant music element is melody. Of rhythm, harmony and form are extremely important and there’s no way a music piece can exist without any of those components. Music represents a solid combination of all the above mentioned elements, therefore each of them serves as an integral part of a composition. However, I distinguish melody as the main element of music. I questioned myself what makes us like or dislike a song we hear, and, more important, what makes us memorize it?

When you’re crooning a song that you like, which part of its structure others hear – rhythm section? No, you’re would be crooning the song’s melody for sure. We like and memorize new music pieces by its melody. Rhythm, harmony and form serve as technical elements for building a composition, while melody is a heart of music. It can be compared with driving a car. If the car is good, you won’t enjoy its wheels or its bumper or any other particular detail, you will enjoy the driving process in general.

Melody is a reflection of all the music elements structured in one solid piece. I would like to quote the great German composer Johann Krinberger, whose words precisely point at the importance of melody: “The true goal of music—its proper enterprise—is melody. All the parts of harmony have as their ultimate purpose only beautiful melody. Therefore the question of which is the more significant, melody or harmony, is futile. Beyond doubt, the means is subordinate to the end.” (Forte, 1979).
