It is a dreaded situation when the scientist is afraid of his own creation! He has no escape route and he has caused collective damage to the society. His inner world lay in shambles. Any individual will turn utterly cynical, confronting such grim consequences, having created awe-some destructive power. ‘The dreaded specter’ refers to the ghost created by Victor. ‘Lifeless’ refers to the extremely shattered state of his mind that has a telling effect on his physical condition. The ‘nervous fever’ also indicates the outcome of his devastated mind.
When the mind is unable to bear the intense load of negative pressures, it passes on the burden on the nervous system. The sequences and consequences of the destructive power unleashed by Victor, was too much for him to endure. He collapses; his body turns a heap of nervous wreck! In a way the story is prophetic and throws light on the prevailing conditions that confront the humanity deeply impacted by the materialistic civilization, and by industrial and internet revolutions. The combustible younger generation of the day acts first and thinks later.
This happened with the scientist Victor. Had he applied the scientific mind and made proper pre-analysis about the results of his dreaded experiments, all concerned and his near and dear ones would have been spared the agony of their sufferings. Those who are crazy about success, and disregard the consequences of their actions will be in trouble sooner or later. But who has the time to listen to the voice of inner conscience and the subtle warnings that it gives from time to time? “None but those who have experienced them can conceive of the enticements of science.” (47) The ‘enticements of science’ is a symbolic expression.
