Art can be defined as a special methodology or technique that is used for carrying out a task and the outcome is beautiful. Simply put, art implies beauty and uniqueness. In context of a painting, art can be defined as the painter’s individual technique of using the brush strokes. Hence, art is a result of a person’s unique understanding and application and it is not something which any other person (except for those who are familiar with the skill and the work) can learn, since its not only the matter of willingness or wish but it is a talent which one must come to possess, naturally. Artists are able to fetch amount in millions for their piece of art or work when it is rare and mesmersing because it’s only them who can produce or create that work and no substitute for their talent can be found. This explains the highly paid paintings or an act delivered by an actor or music composed and sung by the composer and the singer. The reason that artists are highly paid is that quality they deliver is impossible to be delivered by any one else. Art is creative work or its principles; a making or doing of things that display form, beauty, and unusual perception: art includes paintings, sculpture, architecture, music, literature, drama, dance etc (Art definition 5. www.yourdictionary com) Hence, the work is said to be an art when it produces the end result that is beautiful which appeals to others, like dance sequences, songs, buildings, movies etc. Even a chef is said to know the art of cooking when he is able to produce or cook dishes which are unique in taste and flavor. As, no one else given the same ingredients and given the method of cooking would be able to produce the exact tasting dish since the perception of each person differs. Generally, it can be interpreted that art refers to the particular way of doing things In the broadest sense, all the processes and products of human skill, imagination, and invention. In contemporary usage, definitions of art usually reflect art theory, and the term may encompass literature, music, drama, painting, and sculpture. (art encyclopedia) Humans’ skills and imagination leads them to discover and apply a specific technique for completing a task. The process and the methods which go into shaping up of the required result constitute art. The basic origin of the art is the skill which when learned by some one in a proper environment and full dedication can make him do wonders and even originate in him the ideas to provide new dimensions to that particular art. But still the presence of personal interest is highly desirable. Invention can be seen as other word for a unique, revolutionary thought which has never occurred to anyone before. Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions (Art Wikipedia) Here art is defined as an arrangement which again is a process or in other words some method based on intuition or skill. Like the dance steps composed by a choreographer on a certain music will differ from one choreographer to another but the one who is called the best is the one who is admired by the majority. Now there are many dance forms such as classical, contemporary, modern etc. each form represents an era and each form is liked by different people. Hence the kind of dance which appeals to a person will depend on that person’s perception and taste. The young may find salsa and tango as attractive while the old people may stick to traditional dancing styles and find ballet and waltz more appealing. It can be concluded that art is something which keeps developing and changing with times. Dance is also used as a way of expressing one’s feelings which makes it a unique style of carrying out the task of communicating one’s ideas to the other. Like the dance forms like salsa are used to express the feeling of love and wanting whereas group dance imbibe a sense of unity, and support in working, living, celebrating, and difficult times. Each culture has its own unique form of dancing. Art can be defined as high quality of conception and execution, as found in works of beauty; aesthetic value (art 3. The Free dictionary). Art as high quality conception implies that it’s a special idea which does not occur ordinarily. But the execution of that idea can be developed and added to and carried out in new ways as suited to varying tastes and times. In today‘s time when stress and tension are at their peak and form a part of every person’s life, a person who is able to live life in a balanced and beautiful way such that he is happy and content at the end of the day is said to know the art of living. Here in this case art comprises of the methods used by the person to keep his mind balanced and stable even when faced by an adverse and difficult situation. His skill of finding the solutions to even the most difficult situations in life may be seen as the unique steps taken by him to tackle the various problems and make his life better and pleasant than before which surely is a beautiful end product. Therefore finding creative and unique solutions to the desired end is the main idea implied by this definition. Art is expression and the artiste is one gifted with the ability to express but expression is not confined to the ability of the artiste (Noronha Art and the Artiste) Art is expression, simply said this definition is incomplete. Since expression is of many forms and almost everyone in this world has the ability to express himself which does not mean that everyone is an artist. Also, the art is very much limited by the ability of an artist. Only if the way of expressing is beautiful would it be called an art. When a baby expresses his distress by crying out aloud, it can not be said he is using art. Talking in the terms of expression only, would deny cooking as an art. Because it’s hard to comprehend what a cook is trying to express when cooking food since cooking is a process of cooking the food in a way which brings out the best flavor and taste. Art implies beauty; generally, it’s a pleasure to the eyes, senses and sometimes even responsible for inspiring others. Mostly, any art form needs inspiration to originate and it ends up inspiring everyone who like it or admire it or get involved in it. Art is a creation that is savored by the people. An artist’s success is measured by the depths to which his art touches the audiences’ heart and soul. Sometimes this notion leads the artist to get carried away from his original ideas and produce a piece which is based on detailed assessment of the targeted audience’s taste and liking. In order to gain name and fame such artists deny their own discoveries, thus changing the meaning of art. In their case the art of expression or communication becomes the art of gaining popularity and money. Do such people have a right to be called an artist? I do not think so because in my point of view art is related to originality and belief in one’s ideas and skills which is not dependent on someone’s likes but only the creators’. The employment of means to accomplish some desired end; the adaptation of things in the natural world to the uses of life; the application of knowledge or power to practical purposes (Definition of Art Brainy Quote) This definition generalizes the concept of art to an extent which is highly disagreeable. The specialty or uniqueness of art is completely denied and it is seen as a mere application of knowledge or power. Even the purpose implied here is not related to beauty and appeal. The element of innovation is completed absent in this definition of art. Art is more or less always related to imagination and fantasy. Thus describing it as a means of achieving a practical end is uncomprehending. Unless, the end product is to be used as a means of enjoyment and appreciation. Art is a result of a creative impulse, or the creative power. The above definition fails to specify the type of power which can be used for creating artistic products or solutions. This definition of art suggest that every one in this world is an artist since each and every person each day is using his knowledge and power for some practical purposes. But not every one life is beautiful and stress free. Lastly, the ‘desired end’ which here seems to imply the target or a goal is rather confusing. Before staring a dance, dancers do not have a goal in my mind and even if they have they can not plan their dance in a way to achieve that end. For example, while participating in a contest, different artists performing different dance forms would be performing what they know and always do, the desire to win can not and does not allow them to alter their dancing techniques. They will have to perform according to their skills and dance form and the end decision is in the hands of the judges who may or may not like it. Many a times, it’s also the case that the artist themselves do not know that to what end their work will be taking them. The artist get the end result which is sometimes better than they could ever expect from themselves or worse but does that mean that the artist intended to produce such result.
