The percentage of women managers/supervisors in this study (44 %) approximates the general trend established by Zhong (2006) who claimed that women represented 20% to 40% of management positions in about 60 countries based from ILO statistics.Table 2 presents a distribution of the respondents when they are grouped according to their average number of working hours per week. Working hours per week is divided under 4 categories: 1 – 20 hours, 21 – 40 hours, 41 – 60 hours and 61 – 80 hours.

It may be gleaned from Table 2 that exactly one-half of the respondents, a majority of the respondents work an average of 41 to 60 hours per week, while 29 out of 100 or 29% of the respondents work 21 to 40 hours per week and 10 out of 100 or 19 % of them spend 61- 80 hours at work. Only 2 of the 100 0r 2 % of the respondents work for an average of fewer than 21 hours per week. The mean of the grouped data in Table 2 is 47.7 hours, and the standard deviation is 14.7, which implies a very high variability.

The mean of the ungrouped data is slightly higher at 48.71 hours, but the actual values of the working hours showed even a larger dispersion from the mean at 15.72. The median of the data is 51 hours and the mode is 60 hours, with 7 of the respondents disclosing that they work an average of 60 hours a week and 6 working an average of 59 hours.Comparison of the average number of working hours per week revealed that revealed that women managers/supervisors worked 51.61 ± 15.17 hours while their male counterparts averaged 46.

43 ± 15.89 hours per week. A two-tailed t-test [Appendix B1] at a 0.05 level of significance (t = -1.65; df = 98; p-value = 0.102) revealed no significant differences in the time spent at work per week between the male and female respondents. This finding does not seem to lend credence to Kelly (cited in BBC, 2006) who felt that women in the workforce have traded down their hours in favor of their roles as homemakers.
