Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, the saviour in the Christian religion (which is a prevalent theme in the Legend of King Arthur; plus the New Year is a time of new beginnings. The reason the Green Knight does not die is also symbolic of the time of year. The Green Knight is also portrayed as not from this world. Perceval’s weaknesses are his mercy and respectfulness. When he triumphs over a foe in battle, he is swayed by their pleas. He even becomes friends with one vanquished enemy, the Knight Kay.
When he is in castle with the grail, Perceval fails to ask the correct question because he is respecting the request that he not ask too many questions. That lapse causes the King’s demise. Roland is like Perceval, both were soldiers. Both men are also respected by their leaders. Roland is respected by Charlemagne; whereas Perceval is respected by King Arthur.
