Utilitarianism The case of Weber identifies two selection options for the company. First, the company should select the senior most white and black workers in equal numbers for the training program as they already practice. Second, the company can select senior most workers among all of employees as proposed by Weber. The proposal of Weber is comparatively profitable for the Kaiser as the experienced workers will be more beneficial after acquiring training. However the issue is to adjust ratio of black workers to overcome discrimination. The utility of training is not the same for white and black workers. As the black workers have fewer opportunities of training and development, hence the value of program is more for such workers as compared to that of white workers. White workers have higher wages and compensations than that of black workers, thus according to theory of diminishing marginal utility white workers have less utility of money. Weber only wants the position in training while white workers need the training. Weber has many other opportunities being a white worker. Hence the opportunity is quite valuable and has higher utility of training than white workers. Moreover, such measure to counter discrimination will result in creating positive relationship between white and black workers. Keeping in view all the costs and benefits of the selection method of the program, it is ethical and beneficial for all the involved parties. Rights The case of Weber defines the maxim at first. As the company did not take any measure to compensate the black workers and initiated the program only after forced by the government, hence the maxim is a response towards government initiative and the deep maxim is to overcome racial discrimination. It is not bad to set the selection method in favor of black workers. The other way to select the senior most white and black workers alternatively does not satisfy the theme of program as the employees would know that the mean of program is to reduce discrimination. Caring Though the information is not enough yet it can be assumed that the managers in the company are white people. Thus the formulated policies are clearly made in favor of white workers. Managers should care for the white workers as per care theory. However another important aspect also exists in the case. Racial discrimination in the U.S. has been very critical and the impact could be seen on relation between the black and white people. The Kaiser should care for the relationship of white workers as well like they care for other aspects. White people would also feel that they are more skilled and in better positions than that of black workers. The inter-racial relationship can be disturbed. Hence for the sake of overcoming long lasted discrimination and to bring equality, it is ethical to give such favor to the black workers. The company should care for the weaker people. Virtue Theory The need is to analyze three parties of the matter as virtue theory stresses over people. Helping vulnerable group in a company is moral and ethical. It is a healthy practice to aid vulnerable people. Once the black workers acquire skills, white workers will rethink about their attitude and black workers will be better paid and respected since the action is within moral grounds. Consequently, action of Kaiser is ethical as the primary objective is to vanish discrimination within the company. More skills and knowledge would let the black workers acquire more influence. Experience of Weber is frustrating but the need is to coup with large scale issue. Most appropriate theory for the case is Utilitarian Theory and Justice Theory. Utility of black workers is higher than that of white workers. Hence ethical way is to provide more opportunities to the black workers. Considering Justice Theory, present condition of the company shows inequality of the black workers. The theory suggests providing more opportunities to the black workers. Caring theory is also applicable while viewing inter-racial relationship of the workers. It is ethically correct to enhance the position of black workers so they earn respect and stay in equal relationship with the white workers. Virtue theory is also important in this context as the managers will deploy the existing method to reach at equal level. Rights theory is least effective for the case as discrimination is ignored. Kant wishes that society must be rational and denies discrimination and his theory collapses because he does not admit irrational behavior in the society. Read More
