Extract of sample "The University of California Irvine of Purpose"

I am particularly interested in being part of the University of California community because of its great mission of fostering participatory learning and attending to the demands of a global multicultural society. The desire to be part of an independent, research-oriented, and challenging learning environment is the driving force behind my decision to apply as a student at UC.

I am applying for a transfer to the Computer Science and Engineering Major Program. My interest in the program began during my childhood with the love of computers. My parents realized that I had a lot of interest in computers encouraged me to pursue the field and acquire as much information on computers as possible. I also attribute a lot of my interest to my teachers, especially those who had discovered my ability and desire to achieve in sciences assisted me greatly in following my desired goals. I felt encouraged, worked hard, and achieved good grades in Sciences and mathematics which saw me secure a college opportunity to pursue a course in the field of my desire.

At Long Beach City College I took pre-requisite courses in programming such as C++ and Java and attained the best grades in the classes. I have completed more than 60 courses which I believe places me on very good ground to easily navigate the Computer Science and Engineering Program. I have come to experience the role played by information technologies in the life and world of today and therefore by acquiring this valuable knowledge I should be in a position to make a solid contribution to society’s wellbeing. Out of personal initiative and fun, I have been able to successfully make a website that attracted a lot of interest from several businesspeople. I enjoy programming and currently am working on several websites just test my abilities. Being a very strong believer in independence, critical thinking, participation, and challenges I hope to find the educational experience at the UC Irvine quire enriching and stimulating.

Apart from academics I am very outgoing and enjoy being a member of student clubs, educational forums, and taking part in track and field events. Through participation in club activities and academic student forums, I believe I get a very unique opportunity to interact with the entire college community with a meaningful exchange of knowledge. As a sports person, I can keep fit both psychologically, mentally, and physically which is very important to my learning life. As a student forever therefore I hope to take advantage of available facilities on campus and enhance my graduate experience for academic, professional, spiritual, and social growth to graduate as a responsible member of society.
