Families with Grandparents Raising Children Grandparents raising children usually tackle caregiver role making them to have no time of getting. Some grandparents have full custody of their children and are forced to deal with custody arrangements and financial support. This is as difficult task considering that the grandparents also have their own issues of old age that they have to deal with. Grandparents may unpredictably find themselves raising children because of many reasons that may include economic and social challenges.

Some of the causes that may see grandparents raising children are military deployment, mental health problems, family violence, poverty, child abuse, death of a parent and divorce.Families like me in TennesseeAccording to (www.aarp.org) 140, 564 children under the age of 18 live in homes headed by grandparents and that 72, 094 children live in homes where their grandparents are responsible for them although most of them have no parents in the home.Also, the statistics shows that 69, 950grandparents are responsible for their grandchildren and out of this number, 70% are white, 26% Black/African, 70% are under age 60, 22% live in poverty and 44% have no parents of the children in the home.

Families like me in AmericaIn the United States, there are forms of care and custody in place and they include power of attorney and consent of laws. There also several consents included for grandparents raising children in the United States and they include medical consent and educational consent. A State Fact Sheet shows that over 6 million children are raised by their grandparents and that almost 2.5 million of those children do not have their parents with them. Grandparents play vital role both within and out of foster care system.

Among the children living with their grandparents, almost 6.3% are under 18 thus indicating almost 30% rise from 1990 to 2000. Tips for TeachersTeachers should minimize through action, adjustment difficulties for children raised by their grandparents by letting them know their (children’s) expectations in school such as doing homework.Teachers should also focus on the children’s strengths and remain supportive as well as sensitive to the children.Teachers should pay extra attention to children living with their grandchildren and ensuring their stability both outside and inside classroom.
